This gets "curiouser and curiouser". My 48 F1 is stamped on the passenger frame rail right where alaskanf1 described.
The truck was produced in Richmond VA, and the number is not a complete vin, but rather just the production unit number preceded and followed by the usual star.
Anybody else? - maybe we can get 'fenders to tabulate the results
This all baffles me. I've been over every inch of my chassis at one time or another and the VIN isn't stamped on it anywhere. I've found an engineering number on each individual crossmember and part, but no VIN. Not that this necessarily breaks my heart - now I can stamp it with the VIN from whichever cab I decide to use. Maybe George's drunken monkey was in charge of tagging the chassis on the assembly line. Who knows?!?
Nathan,
When you say by the steering box, is it on top of frame? My 67 is stamped on the passenger side, top flange, about 18" back from the radiator, I brush the frame clean there and did not see anything. I will look by the steering box now.
67pearl, if you were 18" behind the radiator, you were too far to the rear. Look at the passenger side rail just in front of the waterpump/motor mount. In fact if you follow a line along the gen/waterpump belt it should bisect the serial number. (if it's like mine)
on my 52 F-3 my VIN was stamped on the top of the passenger side frame rail, right above the front axle... wasn't hard to find at all, but then I didn't have a clip on the truck either
Gw, you're not looking for a TAG on the frame - just numbers stamped into the frame rail itself and looks to be done with a hand-held punch. They're pretty good size - probably 3/8" high.
Yeah, on the frame it is a hand stamped VIN... Mine has a "star" stamped before and after the Vin #... it might help to take a wire brush to the passenger frame rail to find the stampings. On mine they were fairly deep stamps, but if they were hand stamped they could vary from truck to truck
on my truck it wasnt stamped good at some spots.
looks like it was stamped at an angle and not very deep.
but the wire wheel really cleaned them out real good.
swanny
o yeah, i cant find the plate you wanted but,ill keep looking.
one of these times ill pick up the right book.
Mine was stamped on the right front on the frame rail. I never found it till the entire front end was off and the rail was out in the open under the sun. It has the stars on the ends and the thing looks as if they just barely made it on there. One side (top/bottom)is deep and the other is faded out.
We have two '51 F-1s and a '52 F-1, and they all have the vin numbers stamped on top of the frame rail, passenger side adjacent the front crossmember. Vin numbers start and end with a star. I too am missing the glove box plate for my '52 Five Star Extra as the prior owner lost it when he had the door chromed. Would greatly appreciate info on a vendor that repops blank plates. Thanks.
I just received a MID-Fifties catalog in the mail and you can get the VIN plate from them. You can get it stamped with all of your information or you can get them blank and stam them yourself. If you change anything on the truck, you can have it changed on the new vin plate. I think they were between $50 and $80. The also have the mounting screws. I need to get one for my '55 F-250.
