7.3l Problem

My 99 F250 7.3l Starts Up Ok And Will Idle No Problem. It Goes Well For A 1/4 Mile Or So Then Starts To Sputter And Skip And Runs Out Of Power. It Has No Throttle Response No Matter How Much You Push Down Pedal. It Comes Back To Life And Start To Drive But Skips And Chugs Finally Cuts Out. It Will Start Back Up After A Little Cranking And Will Fire Up But Runs Like Its Flooded And Motor Knocks And Chugs Like Not On All Cylinders. It Clears Up And After A Few Times Of This It Will Run Fine Or When It Reaches Normal Temp Everything Is Ok. I Replaced Cps Already But No Help. Any Ideas.

Fuel filter sounds clogged.

Might also be that "crud in the pump inlet" thing that Kwik experienced.

Inplug ICP next cold start. If everything is OK then you may need new IPR or maybe just IPR o rings.

There Is No Smoke At All And Seems To Happen Atany Temp. Morning Temp 40 But Afternoon Temp When Leaving Work Was 70 And Same Problem. It Seems To Happen After Truck Sits For A While Like Over Night Or Siiting All Day While At Work. After It Runs For A While And I Shut It Down It Will Start Up And Run Fine.

Something we all to often overlook when replacing CPS check AG 8 and 9

AG5 CHECK FOR COLD WEATHER GELLED FUEL
Does vehicle have lack/loss of power in cold ambient temperatures?
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="92%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TH width="50%">Yes </TH><TH width="50%">No </TH></TR><TR><TD width="50%">CHECK fuel quality. If equipped with fuel heater, GO to AG6 . If not equipped with fuel heater a service kit is available. </TD><TD width="50%">GO to AG3 . </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

AG6 CHECK FUEL HEATER
  • Fuel heater circulates return fuel when coolant temperature is between 15°C and 26°C (60°F and 80°F).
Is heater functioning correctly?
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="92%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TH width="50%">Yes </TH><TH width="50%">No </TH></TR><TR><TD width="50%">GO to AG3 and proceed with diagnostic tests. </TD><TD width="50%">REPAIR heater as necessary. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

AG7 RETRIEVE/CLEAR CONTINUOUS DTCS
  • Go to Section 4A or Section 4B, Diagnostic Subroutines, Performance Diagnostic Procedures. Retrieve/Clear Continuous DTCs.
  • Record any codes retrieved.
  • Clear Continuous DTCs.
Are CMP fault codes retrieved?
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="92%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TH width="50%">Yes </TH><TH width="50%">No </TH></TR><TR><TD width="50%">GO to AG6 . </TD><TD width="50%">GO to AG8 . </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

AG8 CHECK COLD CMP CLEARANCE (CMP CODE PRESENT)
Did engine fail to reach rated speed only when engine oil was cold?
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="92%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TH width="50%">Yes </TH><TH width="50%">No </TH></TR><TR><TD width="50%">GO to AG7 . </TD><TD width="50%">INSTALL a new CMP according to Workshop Manual direction and, if necessary, add shim F6TZ-12J027-M to create approximately 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) clearance to timing disk. VERIFY repair. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

AG9 CHECK CMP CLEARANCE TO TIMING DISK
  • Remove and inspect CMP for evidence of contact with the timing disk (scratches or unplugged holes on working surface).
Is there evidence of contact?
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width="92%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TH width="50%">Yes </TH><TH width="50%">No </TH></TR><TR><TD width="50%">INSTALL a new CMP according to Workshop Manual direction and, if necessary, add shim F6TZ-12J027-M to create approximately 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) clearance to timing disk. VERIFY repair. </TD><TD width="50%">INSTALL a new CMP sensor</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I would check the oil in the HPOP to make sure that your check valve is not letting it drain down and thus running like crap until the low volume pump can fill it sufficiently at which time it will run OK. It should be within an inch of the top. If not, the next time it is cold, fill it with clean oil and see if that has any impact. The plug is on the top under the cosmetic cover. Cost=time.

by any chance can you drive this truck with a fuel pressure gauge to see if pressure is dropping out on it? inside the pickup assembly in the tank there are two screens that can stop up even with good fuel. you have to disasemble the pickup and clean the screens. if you dont find anything with the oil issue i would suggest trying this.

I should have said low pressure oil pump and not low volume. BTW when was your last oil change? How many miles on the truck? I still think warming up has less to do with it than the time it is taking to build pressure in the HPO system since you say no smoke, and it is temp independant, and more time not running related.
