ok so i have an intake for my 1999 3.0L Ranger and i was debating on buying a throttle body spacer to gain a few extra horses and i was wondering if any of you guys have purchased one, and if so does it really improve performance?
I run 2 of them, if 1 is good, 2 should be better. They seem to work better when you use them with the tornado, or electric super charger from ebay. I got 25 extra ponies on the dyno with just the 2, thinking maybe I'll try 3 and see what that gets me !!
"Seriously friend", on a ford fi motor, all they do is whitsle, which is kinda cool. However, I have used them on jeep inline motors with a larger tb with good results, crisp throttle responce, lowered the power band a tad, you could feel a difference. My theory is (and I'm dumb as a box of rocks) they seem to work better on tbs that are mounted horizontal -vs- vertical like on our engines, this is not scientific, just my experience as the jeep tb's were mounted horizontal and the other vehicals were vertical. They did seem to work well on carbed engines. AEM does the dyno work for you, if there are gains with the spacer, they include one with the kit for your application, like the jeep kits, if there's no gains, the kit doesn't have one, like for our trucks. I didn't mean to rib you, it's just one of those topics you can have a little fun with. The best performance mod you can get for your 3.0 that really works and ypu can feel the difference, is a bama chips programer. The programs are made by a ford ranger guy who specifcally tunes to your truck for the most power gains, you can even get 87 octane programs. These programers are on sale right now at www.jusnesmodified.com (Bob is a member here) or you can get them directly from Doug at www.bama chips .com. There an awesome product, alot of us on here have them.
Also Bob at jusnesmodied has an underdrive pulley for about the same price as a tb spacer for your 3.0, they do work to release alttle more torque and hp from your engine.
My understanding of TB spacers is that they are effective on a handful of engines that happen to have poorly designed intake/TBs that benefit from a spacer, the Jeep 4.0 I-6 being one (seems one of the newer Mustang engines might be another(?)). Because they do work in some applications, people figure they'll work everywhere, but that's not true.
At least a 100, "no', not really, I just can't help myself from doing this sorta thing. I'm not sure on the 3.0, on my 4.0 with a few mods you get around 12-14 hp with close to 20 foot pounds of toruqe, you can really feel it. Waves got a bama for him 3.0 and he said it made a big difference. Don't quote me on this, but I think I'm pretty close, on a stock 3.0, I believe it's 10 hp and 15 pounds of torque. Bob Jusnes, if you see this could you confirm ? Bob also sells bama for Doug. I'm positive it's in that ball park on a 3.0 and worth every penny, I may even be a little low. Of all the mods I've done, bama is the one I'm most impressed with.
The power seems about right, but its not just the power. BamaChips takes the time to make all the adjustments that will help, which means you will also get increased fuel mileage, better shifting transmissions (automatic) more responsive throttle and just easier day to day driving.
TB spacers are a waste on long runner intake designs, like most late model rangers. They help out short runner intake manifolds, but for our trucks, it would be a waste of money. You'll notice I wont even sell them on my site. For the same price, an underdrive pulley will deliver much better results, especially on the 3.0, the gains have proven to be quite substantial for as cheap as it is.
I don't know fordboy, I guess I was in a mood ha ha I was trying to be funny, I hope ranger14 doesn't think I was being a smart butt at him, I was just being a smart butt in general yesterday. At anyrate ranger14, I'm glad that we could help, at least a little. Also welcome to the site, were really glad to have you "buddy", if there's anything else we can help you with, just ask.
Let us not forget ebay's famous electric super charger. I even used slick 50 for increased hp, it was sure slick how they rooked me out of my twelve bucks hee hee !!
