Intermitted heat/overheating

I have a 1997 F150 4.6L with about 135,000mi and lately my cooling system has been acting up. Starting out in the morning things will heat up normally for the first 5 minutes of driving, I will get heat from the blower and the temp gauge reads normal. Then the temp gauge drops some and all I get is cold air for about 5 minutes. After this, the temp gauge goes all the way up to the HOT range (occasionally the temp warning light will come on), stays there for a few seconds, then drops back down to normal. At this time I start getting heat again and the heat remains constant for the rest of the drive. Once the engine has cooled the same heat, no heat cycle repeats itself constantly.

I have tried changing the thermostat twice, purging the system of air, new rad over/bottle cap, but the same thing is happening. Any thoughts on this?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Perhaps the waterpump is cavitating or the impeller is slipping on the shaft?

Same problem. How did you fix it.

Hey Gene, I have the same problem, except on a 2000 F150 5.4L. How did you fix yours.
