Ford part numbers start with a decade letter: B = 50s, C = 60s, etc.
The next digit "8" is the first year of the decade the part was used - in your case 8 so 1968.
The next letter designated the application - in your case T for truck.
The next letter "A" is for the type of part - I'm guessing "A" for axle.
the four digits after the "-" indicate the base part number. 6015 for engine blocks, 6090 for cylinder heads, etc.
Take a look at www.ford-y-block.com/fordpartnumbers.htm for more information.

The 47/12 is the axle gear tooth count: the ring gear has 47 teeth, the pinion has 12. 47/12 = 3.92 ratio. That's assuming someone hasn't changed the gears and/or tag over the years. The 3.92 was a standard, stock ratio in 1951 through 1956 on the 1/2 ton (F-1/F-100) trucks.
Hope this is a little help and Happy New Year!
