ive also noticed on the 91 f-250 when i had it towed home th coolant level is low.two days before i brought home level was up???truck ran when got home even with no compression in 5.now it wont start:-{.
Be careful, if the cylinder is full of coolant you can bend or break expensive engine internals like the crank or connecting rod. Water does not compress.

I just spent part of my weekend replacing a cracked front cylinder head on my 3.8l in my Windstar. After I fired her up I got a misfire and No.2 cylinder which is the rear head which looks to be also cracked. With all the tools at hand it took me 1 hr 45 min till I got the rear head off and that included a 20 minute return trip to the autoparts store to pick up a 13mm 1/2" drive deep socket to get those darn exhaust manifold bolts off.
Who was that guy that put aluminium cylinder heads on a cast iron block?

That is the beauty of these diesel trucks, I have never had to remove a head on any of mine yet. Of course it helps if you buy good quality BERU glow plugs.
The passenger side is the hard one, the heater/AC box is in the way.
With air tools you are looking at about 6 hours.
Pull air cleaner
Pull IP and injection lines.
Pull alternator
Pull vacuum pump
Pull the brackets for the above
Pull the fuel filter and bracket
Disconnect the wiring harness, chassis to engine
Pull exhaust manifold
Drain the coolant
Pull intake manifold
Remove the rocker cover
Remove the injectors and glow plugs from that head.
Remove the heater hose from the head.
Removing the thermostat housing gives you more room to manuver the head.
Remove the head bolts, this is where it gets hard, some of the head bolts will not have room to pull out of the head. You need to use some fuel line about 2" long that is split down one side to slide over the head bolts to hold them up. I think there are three bolts that need this.
The head is rather heavy, an engine hoist makes it much safer for you and the head during removal from the engine bay.
Hood off also gives you much more room to sit in the engine bay while wrenching.
If you have a turbo it is much easier to pull the engine before you take the head off.
