im leaning toward replacing the steering on my 51 f1. what is the easiest swap? toyota? leaning towards re-building the original straightaxle instead of the mii ifs. the truck has ch@vy motor, all else is stock.
for the swap what would be needed?
It all depends on how your budget is but I would recommend using a C@$!* type column, steering pump and gear box since that is what you are running in your F-O-R-D!!!! The toyota swap is easy but if you want to pay a price for a rebuilt or (my favorite) junkyard box its up to you. Midfifty.com and bobsf100.com sells the complete kit. I am using the toyota swap since there were so many import yards where I am at. Good luck!!!!!
I went with the rebuild on my 55 front end all new stuff except the tie rod mine was OK, for the springs I just got a new main leaf the rest were ok after I grind the rust off,it didn't cost as much as a MII unit. The toyota unit went in with a breeze the box lasted for 10 years, last week I replaced. It is way more cost effective to just purchase the bracket and get a steering box from the salvage yard. While I was at it I added disc brakes also.Another simple modofication that you can get the bracket and get everything from the salvage yard.

ok im planning on the rebiuld stock. i want disks. what do i need for the toy swap. obliosly the box but what are the steps and parts needed? ive seen the aft brakets for the brake boosters and stuff but am comfused.
All you need is the bracket and the pitman arm that has the 51 ball. I also had to make the hole the original box used to go through the fram so the toy shaft wouldn't rub. There are several types of brackets weld-in/bolt in. I'm not sure which company makes the one for the 51, since mine is a 55 it may be the same I don't know. Bob's F-100 and Mid-Fifty I know has brackets was a post a few weeks ago a guy detailed how he made his own pitman arm and bracket. if you go with stock steering column you will need a centering bearing to hold the shaft centered in the tube, Bob's F100 has this. You can use the toyota U joints and drop your shaft into it after you get it the right length and weld it or buy a borgenson joint for about $90. I used the toyota U-joints and slip joint and welded about 23" of my original shaft to the end. The shaft fitted perfect inside the toyota part.

Gwilkrrs,
Check out the info on the thread I started entitled: "Any way to adjust a Toyota PS box?" There's info in there about what years are compatible and what parts of the PS system you should get if you take it off a vehicle from a salvage yard.
