Bought a 1994 Explorer a few months ago and it made over 20 mpg on the trip home from PA. Since then I have fixed the AC, cruise, and radius arm bushings. I have changed fluids in the M5OD twice. Had the cooling system flushed. It has always had a strong gas odor in the drivers side engine compartment near the canister. On a trip last weekend the mpg went down about 5 mpg. The check engine light came on for a few minutes and then went back off. Yesterday I went on another trip after replacing the plugs, wires, and air filter. It ran really well and was getting great mpg like it did on the trip from PA for the first 50 miles. Then the check engine light came on and stayed on for the rest of the trip. The gas gauge started going down much faster and it looked like it had lost the 5 mpg or more again. I was driving the speed limit. 70 mph. On the way back a friend drove and drove slower aprox. 65 mph and the mpg seemed to go up and the check engine light stayed off.
I have a Equus 3007 code scanner but no paper work with it. The number of beeps/flashes were as follows: 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 4 2 1 4
Any ideas? Thanks.

Your problem sounds like it could be the throttle postion sensor which is a code 121. I'm not sure how to interpret the numbers that you posted, but I did notice that there is a 121 sequence in your numbers. I suggest getting the codes pulled again with something that you can interpret.
OK. So I'm looking for 3 digit codes? I read some where that there is the 111 or 11 thing then a long pause then another 1 and another long pause before it gives up the stored codes. So if I use that info and work it would be two 111 all clears then the pauses and the 1, then the two 214 codes. Could it be it through it a week a go then a again this last weekend.
Sorry guys I just don't know what to look for. Starting to understand that there may be different sets of codes. On set for key on engine off KOEO and key on engine running KOER. These codes I pulled with the KOEO.
I've found places that list 2, 3, and 4 (has a 0 in front) codes. Just don't know which to look for.
Could be it runs 3 11 all clears then the pause and 1 thing and codes 21, 42, and 14 if I use the 2 digit code format.
I'll go try to run it again when it stops raining.
I picked up another code reader. Looks like the three digit code format is what I needed to look for. Ran the KOEO and have a Continious Memory code 214 - Cylinder identification circuit failure. Ran the KOER test and it showed a 538 code - invalid cylinder balance test due to throttle movement during test.
My code list says that a KOER 538 indicates that you neglected to perform the "goose" test when cued during the KOER test.
CM 214 indicates a problem with the CID input to the EEC-IV computer. On a '94, I'm not sure if CID is passed directly to the computer from the CMP or if it is generated by the ICM based on info from the CKP/CMP. Problems with CID can effect ignition timing as well as fuel injector timing. When severe enough, no CID input can prevent the engine from starting.
If you clear the memory codes, start the vehicle, and then pull codes, does the 214 return immediately? If it doesn't, then whatever is at fault is intermittent in nature, making it more difficult to get a good diagnosis.
Ut oooo! Man you have a way better code book than they put in my code reader book. I'll try again. I did a bit more reading and it had how to do an engine balance test so I may want to try that also.
Hello there My Explorer was doing a simular thing. Read quite a few post and most had to do with the Mass Airflow Sensor. Probably needs to be remove and gently cleaned. Then put back in and run it My check engine lite came back on only once and never has been on since Been over a year since. Mine was pinging and the CEL would go on and off and RPM' ran high. After the cleaning it came back down and now gets around 20 mpg most of the time or a little better Hope this helps Bruce In Kansas
