4 or 2 cats???

Does anyone know when Ford started to put 2 big cats in our trucks instead of 4 small ones??? I have a 4.6 and its a 2005...I beleive its an early 05, and when I went underneath the truck, I can clearly only see one on each side...

OBDII required 2 cats per side (to pass emssions) since '96 or '97. all cars, & light trucks. I think certain larger engine sizes were exempt at the time, but emssions req. gets more strict as the yrs go by. paul

4.5 is when it changed. the 3v motors went back to 2-cats.

And the older models did not have 4-cats. They had 2-catalyst pre-heaters and 2-catalytic converters.

i dont know the cut off date, but the 04s did have 4 cats, sometime in 05, ford stopped using the rear ones. If you only have 2, then you are better off and should be happy!

My 05 with the 5.4 has 4 cats. There are 2 pre-heaters off the exhaust manifolds, an 1 at the y pipe, and one after the y pipe. My truck has a build date of 6/05.

that is strange, on the 04 there are 2 cats on each side, all before the Y pipe. With the o2 sensors between them, making the removal of the rear ones painless

its strange that you even have one after the Y pipe, maybe thats where the extra one ended up on the later models.

The first 2 are pretty high, right off the manifolds, the rear 2 are the most visible underneath.
