they are virtually identical in strength and design. i wouldn't hesiate to run a dana at all, oh wait- i did run one for 10 years with no problems and 38.5" boggers... it was the only thin on he truck that never failed. still hasn't and it's still running 38.5's... i say leave it in place until it dies..

i'm trying to think, what model t-case did dana provide to ford? the only one i can think of is the dana 20 found in early broncos

the 205's are STOUT, they are hands down tough as nails! i would not hesitate one second to run one, i dont care how much HP/TQ you are puttin out!

I think it was the Dana 21 or 24, I know Ford put one in the F100's that was a 1 speed transfer case, 4 High and 2 High. I think they used a Dana 2 speed transfer case also, but I cant remember the model number.

You wouldn't be competive with a set up like that around my neck of the woods in any class for that matter, 4.10's with 35's ? you'd better have a big/huge motor.

oo ok, yea, there were 2 versions (as mentioned by fordpickup)

Dana 21
Single-lever, single-speed
1969-76 F-100 1/2-ton trucks.

Dana 24
two-speed, divorce mounted
1969-73 F-250s.

since yours has a low range then its the Dana 24. unfortunately there is very little aftermarket to support the 24, even if it is a good case. this is what *I* would do. go ahead and continue to run the 24 but go ahead and start looking for a 205, get a good deal on one, then you'll have it just in case

Nah, they made a dana 20 as well, but I dont think they came in any fullsize rigs, about all you see in EB's and a lot of heeps. It's a 2-speed, and I guess they make a kit that's supposed to make it pretty stout too. I got one of those sitting in my garage. Still, np205's probably stronger.

Just a Note. Fishmanndotcom is right. The Dana/Spicer Model 21 was a single speed, divorced case used only on Ford F100's. Ok only as long as you had a big motor and or low gears. The Dana/Spicer Model 24 is a dovorced 2 speed, used in F250's from 1960 to the end of the 1972 model year when it was replaced by the NP205. Both are cast iron units. The Model 24 is pretty strong in construction...probably as good as a NP205 but the 1.98 ratio in low range isn't as low as what you can get in a NP205. Great for general off road use and hard pulls but doesnt have the deep low of a NP205 for things like serious rock crawling. I've had my 71 F250 4x4 since it was new...35yrs? and the only thing that I've replaced on it was the input shaft bearing and seal and shift shaft seals a couple of times.... I use it on the ranch in wyoming to feed round bales to cattle and have put it into some pretty tough situations over the years.
The Dana Model 20 that was mentioned here, was originally made for Jeep's. The Ford model of that series was used in the early broncos and was a cast iron 2 speed box with either a t shifter ( to '73) or a j pattern stick till end of production in '77.
Dana/ Spicer also made a model 23, which is identical to the model 24 internally but it had a right hand drop for GM trucks in the 60's as opposed to the left drop on Fords. It has been my experience that parts for the 21 and 24 are getting somewhat hard to find in your local parts store... why? not sure. There were millions of them made from 1959 to 1972 and occasionally you even see one on a 73 or 74 truck...
