Ahh, e-diagnose this fellas....
Vehicle is a 1995 Windstar LX, 3.6.
Mileage is around 150k.
I was running down the road smooth as silk.
Went down a offramp, and she died.
After alot of cranking, she came to life, seemed to have a miss though.
Ran her about a mile to a safe parking area, moderate power, miss stayed.
I can start her up great, it doesn't crank a whole, whole lot. Miss is there constant.
Don't notice any irregular noises or anything.
There is some oil seeping out the front of the motor where it was clean before.
I haven't looked at it close yet.
Had a neighbor look at it, he ear diagnosed it as a thrown rod, he mentioned all the Ford 3.8's of older years would do this after 100k or so.
Any way to troubleshoot this?
Hate to give up on the van, but I'm getting close to junking it, or findind a slavage yard motor and tranny and doing a cheapy swap.
Thanks for any insight.

Might be a broken rod but I'd sure expect you to hear something indicating such.
Do you have a check engine light?
Where exactly is oil seeping out of the front of the engine/
Possible bad timing chain cover gasket?

Every connecting rod failure I've ever seen has included the rod coming through the side of the block or the oil pan.
This could be as simple as a vacuum leak or a burned spark plug wire, or even a plugged fuel filter.

I thought the same thing when my neighborly mechanic dropped by. Anti-Ford, but I felt he would be truthful. Who knows....
There is nothing sticking out of anywhere that I can see laying on my side looking at the motor.

There is a slight knock or tap, but was wondering this could be from low oil pressure? It lessons under mild throttle.
NO CEL.
When I meant front, it was the "front" facing the grill. I forget these motors are sideays. About halfway down, I haven't had it on ramps yet.
I think the timing chain cover gasket would be negated cause it technically leaks on the side "front"?
I haven't driven the van recently, I just got frustrated and parked it.
Let me know what I can do to try and help diagnose this out and I'll jump on it. I'm lost right now.

So it sounds like it might be leaking around the valve cover.
You have a constant miss but the engine will run.
No CEL comes on.
I'm guessing broken valve spring or related item(s).

I would guess you popped a head gasket. Pretty common with this motor.

For some reason I thought that had already been mentioned in this thread, but as I look back, I see it hasn't been.
Yes, head gasket might be the culprit.
I would think a compression test would steer you towards the problem, be it gasket or a spring, valve stem, etc.
I just don't think it is a rod. As mentioned earlier, if a rod was broken, I'd sure expect a busted block, or loud banging and knocking at the very least.

Hey guys.
I replaced the head gasket two years prior to this. Guess it could have gone bad on me?
I can do a compression test one of these days soon, she has been sitting, now I need a battery too.
If this gets down too a bad valve or spring, what are my options for repair?
Thanks for all the replys,

DO IT!!!! You don't know what you're missing. Sorry, couldn't resist the
Had another thought on this. Suppose the crank sensor is acting up, that could create all the symptoms you've described.

i would check all the plugs and wires first. pop off the valve cover and see if anything is loose. start it and let it run with it off for a second to see everything in action.
