What size bolt for ABS sensor?

What is that bolt that holds the front ABS sensor in place on my 96 4WD? Thought I needed a 1/4" 12 point socket, but thats not it...

What the heck is it???

There are two bolts, the first one is supposed to hold the sensor cable on. That came out no problem, although it didn't seem to free anything up. Is that wire supposed to detach from the sensor, or is a permanent part of the sensor?

The second bolt which holds the sensor has me stumped. I don't seem to have any socket to fit it...

I have scoured the service CD, my Chilton manual, the formus, internet... Beats me... I can't get the dang ABS speed sensor out... Not sure what the prob is. It's rubbing on the sensor ring. I can't finish putting it back together until I resolve this problem.

Did you try a hex key, or allen wrench.

No, the problem as it turns out, is that those things rust into place like nobody's business. You have to completely destroy them to get them out... in pieces...

The hold down bolt will take either a 3/8" socket, or a 10mm... i've seen both used (I guess it depends on the rear end housing whether it's metric or standard).

The sensor itself tends to rust in place... although I've been lucky and never had to tap one out from the inside. Just use some penetrant.. and rock it back and forth.. it'll usually come out.

Good luck

Maybe mine was just particularly bad... it took a concerted effort. The casing came out in several pieces. It was literally fused in place...

I just wanted to add that my 2000 Excursion 2WD had a 3/8 inch bolt on the top of the rear differential holding the ABS sensor in place... in case anyone comes across this thread using a Googlie search like I did.
