I am looking at buying a used 2001 excursion with around 50,000 miles on it. It is a 2 wheel drive limited with the v-10 motor. First question is after reading the thread about the V-10 and all the alleged problems should i even buy one? If i do decide to buy, what to look for regarding past engine problems or any other associated with the vehicle?? BTW, it is on e-bay from a very reputable car dealer.. I am wanting a bigger vehicle for vacation trips and some towing for a 18 foot boat and 26' camping trailer.. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated...
What problems with the '01 V10? Mine has 94K, and not a single problem with the motor. Considering you're looking at an '01, you should be more concerned with the transmission ... unless it's already been rebuilt.
I have a 99 F-350 with a V-10. I put a 4000-5000 lb camper on it's back, then tow a jetboatboat throughout the mountains. It has 100k of this type of abuse with not even 1 minor problem. It's a great motor, just a little "thirsty" IMO. Not the most powerful up in the mountains, but I definately believe one of the most reliable out there.
I have heard alot of reviews about the v-10 spitting out spark plugs due to insufficient threads. 2k-3k for a fix... Just what i've read. Just figured i would ask everyone else..
I just, sadly so, sold my '03 6.0 powerstroke with 40K miles on it for $26.5K. She never let me down and she was a real stock powerhorse. We averaged 13 mpg around town and up to 20 mpg on the freeway. If you can afford the extra cost for the diesel I would do it. I have a lot of friends with V-10's and they alway cry about the lousy mileage 6-8 mpg City & 10-12 HWY.
Conservatively we get 14 city, 18 highway. The diesel is a lot more efficient at low rpm and idling than a gasoline engine. People say that it takes years to pay for the diesel engine with the money you save on gas, but on the other hand, your diesel will always command a premium again when it is time to resell. I doubt we'll see $1.50 gas again - ever.

I may be wrong, but I believe that particular problem was more common on the 2000 models ... maybe even the 1999 SuperDuty truck models.
