351 explosion

We have 2 1989 f-350's. When goin up a hill or sometimes accelerating there is a loud explosion noise that comes from the engine. If you keep the gas peddle at one spot you can make the noise go on and on.
Please help

This happens on both trucks?

Have you checked for fault codes? This sounds a bit bizzare and offhand I can't think what might be causing it. Almost sounds like some sort of extreme pinging. So it goes away if you let up on the gas a little, or press down a bit harder? Does the vehicle seem to slow or hesitate when you hear the noise, or just hum right along happily while these detonations come from under the hood?

are you just talking about backfiring? Probably a timing issue.

tigerdan,
Yes this happens on both trucks. On truck number one when it pings the truck seems to hesitate, but on this truck the noise only happens like 3 or 4 times and then goes away.On truck number two it doesnt hesitate at all when it makes the noise but on this truck if you keep the throttle steady the noise wil go on and on. And the other day my 1990 f-150 when it was cold I gave it alot of gas and did this same noise only once.

Hmm, interesting. If it was one vehicle I could see it being timing as Purdue suggested above, but now three trucks? What's the common denominator here? Does the gas for these vehicles all come from the same source?

Install fresh fuel filters, fuel up from a different source, check the fuel pressure, make sure the EGR valve is working properly, and call me in the morning. lol Could also be O2 sensor issues...

Sounds to me like a lean issue. Mine would crack and pop like that when the fuel pump was going out.
