Question Backup Lights want work

I have a 78 Ford F150 Ranger XLT 4x4 w/automatic Trans. and my backup lights have stopped working! Can the cause be the neutral safety switch?? I checked by taking the bulb out and checking for power and the test light did not come on!

It could be. It's located on the driver's side of the tranny, right where the lever enters the side of the tranny.

Most of these type have 4 wires. Two of them will be red/blue. These are the neutral safety part of the switch, and these go to the starter solenoid and the keyswitch.

The other two are the ones you are concerned with. One will be hot from the fuse, and the other will lead to the rear backup bulbs. Some of the later models used a pink/black wire for this. See if you have power with the key on.. You could also unplug the switch, and make a small jumper and jump the terminals on the plug coming from the truck's harness. If you jump the back-up wires, the lights will come on if the keyswitch is in run.
