As ALWAYS and USUAL i can count on my FORD family to help me out of a plot...now all i have to do is find me a rearend and get some gears...be looking for that explorer or mustang....off to the great junkyards in el paso, tx!!!!!
Picked up one back around Nov. Up here wrecking yards tend to take the wheels off everything they get, hence leaving the vehicles sitting on the drums/discs, etc.
My rear end had so much rust on the housing where the center section had been sitting on the ground that when i started cleaning it off (with a wire wheel in a drill) I went right through the housing. uncovered two different pin holes where the lube actual started leaking out. There were many additional spots where the housing looked as thin as sheet metal.
Yes, they took it back without any hassles and found me another in better shape, but....
(Why do they do that? Why do they take the wheels off?)
<<<'Fenders,
'Rage couldn'ta told you that, cause I don't think that's the reason.>>>
RMF
Sure he did. Here's an excerpt from a recent email......

How have you been? Did you know that salvage yards take the rims and tires off from their cars and sell them to people? Just thought you would like to know that.
Catch you on the boards,
‘rage
I don't know what else you need RMF. By the way, 'fenders is not capitalized, don't let it happen again.
Just in case anyone thinks poor fergie is being picked on without provocation, need I remind you who coined the Oh so popular FTE phrase "girly 302"
'fenders
54 F100
Engine - will be 351w
(last resort would be one of those little, girly 302's)
Tranny - Auto with OD
Rear end - 72 Mustang 9"
Fr. susp. - 99% chance it will be 75-79 Mopar torsion bar IFS
OK, I admit it, I don't really know why they take the wheels off the cars at the salvage yard. Selling them was just a theory. Why not call them and ask?
I can see my work is done here, I will move on to a newer and better thread.
