Paint Code for 1950
My 1950 is going into the paint shop, and we're deciding on the color. It is presently it's original red with black fenders and running boards, with a nice creamy color behind the grill. Looks like we're going to go with all red cab and fenders, and maybe keep the creamy grill.
Some Questions:
1: What is the paint code for the original red? I see that there is a spreadsheet in the Tech Articles, but I don't know how to open xl files, whatever they are! I do have a 1950 salesman's handbook which calls the red "M1722 Vermillion". Is this the paint code? I see some charts which list a Ford F1 6886 Vermillion (Dupont B9790) and a Ford E4 6470 Vermillion Red (Dupont B8954). Are any of these the proper color?
2: The manual also lists a "M14343 Sunland Beige". Would this be the paint code for the grill pieces?
3: Have any of you painted your trucks the original vermillion color? How does it compare to the new Ford Ranger Bright Red Clearcoat or the new Thunderbird D3 Torch Red? I like these colors.
4: What's the proper color for the engine/transmission. My truck only has 2000 original miles, but I can't find ANY traces of ANY paint on the heads or block! Everything else in the engine compartment is still quite shiney! The bolt on pieces all are black.
Thanks for all the help. Keith.

Hey Tim,
Where do you get your engine color info from? I've been pounding on that issue for over three months now and have yet to find any authoritative sources that don't contradict each other.

My info is from Bill Boogaart's website. He's got some pretty impressive gents that plug into his Yahoo flathead forum who should know if it's too far off.

pearl, the color code is not in the vin on your truck. It is possible that its stamped on the firewall in the production code but I haven't gotten any responses to my question awhile back on those. My 48 has an alpha-numeric series just left of the voltage regulator and the first number is the paint code (as near as I can tell) If "7" it was meadow green, if "2" it was vermillion red; I have no other info to go by.
