I am correct to say that the wiring harness is already present for the optional tach? I have purchased a gauge cluster with the factory tach to replace my original cluster.
I can not find the information in my Chilton's and thought I would double check here to make sure before ripping everything apart.
I hope that this question is ok here.If not, please move to proper place.Did the 1984 F150 with the 300 6 have a tach as an option? If so,I would like to have a dash like that for my truck.Current dash has gauges.Am planning to put an 83 300 6 in the truck along with the DS2 ign system.Would this work?
Should be plug and play. The only difference for the 6-cylinder is you don't ground the "8" terminal on the tach. If the truck was originally equipped with a V-8 you'll have to disconnect this ground.
I do have the oil gauge and and ammeter so it looks like this is a green light! Thanks for the info guys and also, this is not for the Bronco, it is for the 85 F-250.
My 1984 was originally a 300. I added my tach after I had installed the 460, but I did not have to change any wires for it to work. As noted above, for it to have worked I should have had to ground the "8" connection, but I have not changed the factory wiring and the tach works.
Yes the E0TZ-17360-A is the part number for the tach itself. They were used for both V8s and the 300I6s.
That's why I always mention, if you ever have a problem with the tach reading "wrong" make sure the "8" terminal is grounded for V8s and not Grounded for the 300 I6s.

As for Mudman, all I can think of, is
Since the trucks from the factory used the same Main wiring harness from the factory, and it didn't depend on engine, I would suppose that when you wired up the 460, you may have grounded the the "8" terminal of the tach without realising it.
Or that the tach is still reading in 6 cylinder mode. The tach will still work, but the reading would be off. You should notice that though. It would be off by about 500 to 1000 RPMs.
Or the thing was grounded from the factory that way.
But as long as it works right, that is the important thing. I could guess all day on what could have happened in your case.
