Can it hurt

I have an 89' f250 straped to a 460, It has a catylitic converter thats gotta
be about 30 in long, So im wondering if i where to take my muffler off of it and
run a straight pipe back from the converter, would it hurt my performance,or make it better, or would it just sound way to loud? Also do i need a muffler to pass washington state emmisions test?

Im not sure about passing the test since I live in canada. I can tell you though that those cats are restrictive. If you yank it off, I would add a good muffler, and you should notice a small difference in power.

Well this I do know, I have to leave the cat on due to washingtons emmissions test
but what if I remove the muffler and run a straight pipe from the cat out the side.
Will this have any affect on the back presure at all?

you could just take the cat off knock it out and put it back on and to anyone that checks will look like theres a cat there

But then he wouldnt pass the emissions test.

If you do a straight pipe from the cat back, you will lose a little bit of torque, and you will gain some HP on the top end. I dont see how a muffler will help with emissions testing...so I dont think you need one. However, a good cat-back exhaust system with a muffler will give you good HP and TQ gains over stock.

how is he not gonna pass the emission test when all they do is to look and see if it physically has a cat? allot of cars can pass the actual readings with no cat.

How would a cat back increase torque, considering it would flow about the same, yet running no muffler would hurt it? Makes no sense to me. Its a big block, it will make torque with almost any exhaust he uses.

It also very possible to pass emissions with a gutted cat. A really good tune up will do more for emissions than running an old cat.

Mufflers are not required for emissions. Sound laws, however are another thing.
