I bought this truck and will pick it up tomorrow. The only rust spot is the one in the picture above the wheel. The clutch is a warn down a lot but it runs great and there isn't really anything wrong with it besides a bent tailgate and broken lock on on passenger side door. I got it for $1000 and hope thats a good deal. Anyways i want to put in a new clutch since ive got a couple days off of school coming up. What exactly is involved with doing this? I have never unbolted a tranny from the motor or bellhousing or any of that. I pretty much just need some instructions.
If you've not done this before, or don't have a helper who has, I'd trot by your favorite autoparts store & buy a repair manual for the year/model, it'll come in handy & will list the things you'll need, to SAFELY do this job, like jack stands, tranny jack, clutch alignment tools, ect, ect.
Depending on the surface condition of the flywheel, it may require pullng for resurfacing, so be prepaired for that!!!!
You might be able to make loan of any special tools needed, at your local autopars store, if they have a "loan-a-tool" program.
Just some thoughts to ponder, let us know how it goes.
My dad works at a Ford dealer so I dont have to worry about special needs. Is the clutch hydraulic? and will i have to do any bleeding or anything like that? lastly, chiltons or Haynes?
OOOHHHH lucky you, your Dad works at a Ford Dealer!!!!!! Well thats probably half of the story!!!!!
Yup it's a hydraulic clutch & a pill to bleed, so be sure to scan the "Tech Info" thread, where ever they've moved it too!!!!, Used to be atop this forum!!!!
On the repair manuals, I like Haynes, Clymer, Chiltons, in that order.
Why not go by your library & look through some different publishers manuals & see which ones repair approach, appeals best to you, before you buy one!!!!
The best clutch on the market for my money is center force and thier really not all that expensive for the top notch product you get. It's kinda hard to explain over the net how to change a clutch, like the guy's have said, get a good manual and some help.
I've also heard good things about LUK clutches. I believe they may make the original clutches for Ford.
Also, I don't know when they started doing this, but if your truck has the slave cylinder mounted concentric on the input shaft, change it while you're in there; you'd hate to have to drop the tranny again in a little while because the slave went bad.
