Tachometer Gremlin
I have a 1986' Ranger with a 2.9L. The other day I was driving home late at night and made the infuriating mistake of pushin' in the clutch with the cruise still on. I hit the rev-limiter for a moment, but everything seemed fine. That is until the next day when my tach didn't work anymore. The strange thing is when I first start up the truck, I get no reading. After she's warmed up for about 5 minutes or so, I start to get like a delayed average/inaccurate reading. After about 15 minutes of driving, it works just fine again. As long as I keep driving the truck for the rest of the day the tach is fine... Until the next morning comes.
I've checked wiring, the distributor, coil and anything even loosely related to the tach's operation. Everything seems fine. The engine still runs great. So unless I am missing something? I am left with the inescapable option of replacing a tach you can not buy anymore. But before I go down to the junkyard and try to find a replacement that includes the temp and fuel gages, I thought I'd ask for any opinions?
I've been told of a tach rebuild kit, but can't find one anywhere. I have never had a tach apart anyway, and am not sure I should try such a thing. I even called the local Ford dealership. They said they'd never heard of this kind of problem ever before.
Thanks everyone!
Dave
Apparently your clutch interlock isn't working. It's supposed to disengage the C/C when you step on the clutch, just as it does (or should) when you step on the brake.
I can't imagine the gauge cluster being too pricy from the boneyard, that's the way I'd go.
