53 and Randy- Do you guys have overdrive? and what are you taching on the freeway. I'm taching about 2500 @60 miles per hour. Thanks guys.
I'm just running the 3-speed C6 and my RPM's are right around the 2500-2600 range. I like the 3.50 gears even though the engine does tend to run slightly high, but not that bad. It's right about the same RPM's as my 4x4. I didn't build a hot rod for gas mileage (I'm averaging around 10-11 mpg with my built 400). I like to press the gas and pass at any speed
I don't know which 9" I'm using yet. I have 3.50, 3.25, and 4.11 at my disposal. I believe the 3.25 would be good for anything w/no od, and the 3.50 for anything w/OD. I do know gas mileage at 55 mph in my 300 6/c6/fulltime 4wd 79 bronco w/31"ers is marginal at best, but go over 60 mph, and it drops off fast as the rpms jump. That's w/ 3.50 gears.
What I want is what AX has, but I'm too broke to buy a T56.
That's why I've been contemplating the 3.23 gearing I've setting in storage to go w/ the 300c.i.er averaging 14mpg, to replace the stock 3.70 that got me on average 25mpg w/ my 223c.i.er.
Last thing I need is to have my bad ankle, that likes to give out on me several times a day, to do that while using a clutch, that's why I went w/ the C-4 & M-o-M.
I really like the 3.25 gearing behind my flathead and stock 3 speed. It's low enough to get things up to speed in a reasonable distance yet the flatty's not screaming at 55-60 mph.
I just pulled the 3rd member on my truck and I'm running 3.00 in it with a regular C4 tranny. I just had a set of 3.50's built for me and am planning on putting them in. The 3.00's, with 28" tires, I'm taching about 2100 at 60. Around town or off the line, there isn't much there. I do a combination of mostly street driving and some highway. I'm going to go with the 3.50's because 53 and Randy and I have quite a bit in common, except for my good looks LOL... I too have built my truck as a hot rod. I miss that quick off the line response. Thanks everyone. I'll let you guys know how the truck runs with the new gearing.
Since I have some room in 6th I may end up dropping the rear down to a 4.1 or so depending on how she pulls the trailer. Gas milege in the high 20's is nice tho.
Those calculators under Articles/Specs don't account for a O.D. Trans.
With combination that I have (Mild 351W/AOD,3.50 rear gear and 27.8 dia rear tires) I can brake the rear tires loose just by standing on the throttle (not like my mustang ( sure wish I didn't sell that car) did but it is fun))
Minger, I bought my 3.50 gears from Summit racing. They also have bearing and seal kit for about $89 which is a good thing to get since your going through and changing things.
Thanks for the tip. I figure 36 yr old rear end, thelast 10 of it sitting in a scrapyard, something tells me thatthe bearings and seals are due. Thus truck stuff is enjoyable but man, there is always something else to add to the "to do"list.
