Well, I finally traded in my Ranger Edge 4x4 and picked up a 2005 F-150 FX4 Super Crew last nite. All I can say is WOW!!!! This is the first F-150 that I've had since my '85 F-150 2x4. Its nice to be back. How do you guys do with gas with the F-150's? I've got the 5.4 L V-8. Can't wait to get some mud on her to see how things go. Also, I'm kinda thinking of a slightly different exhaust for a beefier sound to round out the package. Any tips? Do the performance exhausts really add performance or are they more just for the sound? Look forward to hearing more....

I put a magnaflow on my 04 f-150 sounds great didn't do a thing for the performance it is still a slow pig gas mileage you should get 14-17 combined, these trucks are very heavy!!

Basically they are for that deep throaty sound, but it can also improve the quality and performance of your ride. You just need to look for a good exhaust.
for now i just changed out the muffler on my o6 f-150 to a magnaflow. nothing for performance but it gave it a little deeper sound which is alot nice than stock, im gonna go true dual exhaust when i get the money.
Check us out at MotorHaven for some exhaust ideas when you're ready to do the upgrade to true duals, we also have an FTE promo running for forum members...
I added the Dual Cat back Magnaflow exhaust, I noticed a difference in sound right away not much in way of perfromance so I did all the other little upgrades to achieve that.
You can check out my gallery to see all the other upgrades. Not as many as some but enough to improve it.

My 05 FX4 gets 13 to 14 mpg around town, and 17 to 18 on the highway at around 70 mph. The only way to get any real performance gains is headers all the way to a low restriction muffler. (I run a Dynomax race muffler). Most dual exhaust systems are a muffler with 2 exit pipes. This set up is fine and will make your truck sound way better but don't count on big power gains. In my opinion, a low restriction muffler, a higher flowing intake and air filter and a Programmer will make a HUGE noticable differance in sound and power gain.
Congrats on your FX4 i believe you'll like it. I got an average of 15 mpg and thats hand figuring it. i ran just straight pipes with no muffler and i loved the way it sounded.
