The service department says its not throwing any codes. I can't help but wonder if they really even checked it. I don't trust them at all. I know they didn't put it on the computer at the first dealer I had it towed to because they told me they didn't. I think that is because I didn't buy it there. The second time I had it towed to the dealer where I bought the car and they say it tisn't throwing any codes.
To be honest, I don't trust mine either; that's why I go to a DI performance if I need a diagnostic or sometimes any work, done. They take the time to do it right then and there, and allow you watch while explaining everything. Best of all, it's only $35 instead of the $100+ the dealer wants for a diagnostic. If you find a local diesel performance shop, I'd go there, get a diagnostic, then take it to the dealer with the information you have. A diesel performance shop will more than likely tell you the truth the first time, instead of wasting your time, and letting your truck sit like your dealer probably did.
There are a few things that cause a 6.0L to not start. A faulty CMP will set a code, won't it? A high pressure oil problem will definately cause a no-start and I'm not sure it will set a code.
Randomly replacing parts is not the preferred method of troubleshooting. (though it happens quite a bit) There are procedures to diagnose a no-start condition and if your service dept can't or won't perform the procedures, find one that will.
Does it try and start or do nothing? I had a bad transmission selector switch cause mine to not start a few times. I found if I wiggled the shifter a little while trying to start then it would fire right up. I replaced the sensor and no problems in over a year.
You might check your key.. Some of the earlier X's have a problem with the chip not shutting off the theft program.. That has happened to me and I've only had mine since the 6th of this month ('01). I pulled the key out and turned it over and it started right up.. a day or so later it did the same thing and I noticed that the theft lite was still flashing and the engine was turning over, but not starting..The next day the whole thing just clicked and I had to buy new batteries (original batteries in an '01) and haven't had a bit of trouble since then..Mebbee the process of installing the batteries and rebooting the computer did something for it...
I went out to check that and the sucker started! It hasn't started all day and now that it is bed time she is ready to go. I'm sure I will get my opportunity to check it tomorrow or the next day. Thanks
Hi, sorry I haven't been back for a while with updates...I am still having the problem. when I try to start the truck it tries to start but will not turn on over. I checked the tach and it doesn't move at all when trying to start. I can tell you this...I was desperate the other evening(needed to get my son to a football game) and I sprayed starting fluid in it and it started right up...I probably shouldn't have done that but...oh well I had to go. I use to have problems with it smoking really bad when I first started up and then it run sluggish so I took it to the dealer and they said the turbo was going down and replaced it. It fixed that problem.
For two weeks now my ex has been starting up every time until Thursday so I replaced the cam position sensor that night. It started up immediately after replacing the CPS but then yesterday wouldn't start again. I'm lost.
I am still confused when you describe the symptoms. You said the engine "tries to start but does not turn over". What does this mean? Is the engine actually turning but not starting ignition? Or does it mean that the engine is not turning at all and all you hear are the "click" of the starter relay/solenoid?
Even with a bad CPS, the engine should rotate when you turn on the ignition key to "start" position.
OK. Either
1) There is no fuel (due to electronic problem with fuel control computer), or
2) There is too much fuel (due to measurement problem).
I am still betting on the fuel measurement problem. This could explain the intermittent nature. Look into the air flow meter. If this measures "low", there will be not enough fuel injected. If it measures "high" (which it would with debris / oil on the hot film device), then you will get too much fuel injected. This could prevent starting.
All this is just a guess. I do not claim to be a diesel mechanic.
Hi all, thought I should give everyone that tried to help me an update as to what was causing my excursion to not start at times. They finally figured it out after I got stranded about two hours from my home and I called them furious, threatening a few things. It was a crack in one of the wiring harnesses. Who would have figured?
