I am scratching my head on this one. When attempting to replace my old e-brake cables with new ones, I discovered that the new ones did not have a return spring attached at the cable end which attaches to the pawl inside the rear drum like the original ones did. So purchased what looked like a return spring but couldn't figure out how it would attach to the cable. It won't slip over it and looks different than the original. The problem I'm having is that I can engage the e-brake but when I disengage it, it does not return to the disengaged position. What am I missing here? My parts guy at Ford said these were the correct cables (and springs if I needed them which I may not in this case) and my mechanic can't figure out what's missing either? He's very competent and for him to scratch his head too brought me to the forum. Anyone run into this before and what's the fix? Thanks anyone. Lou.
The spring for the cable doesn't come with the new cable. You need to reuse the old one. The end of the spring goes against the park brake lever which attaches to the shoe. The spring is big enough for the cable to fit through.

My mechanic told me that the old had the spring attached to the end of the cable from the factory. It could not come off because the lead ball at the end of the cable was larger than the diameter of the spring opening. The new cable had the same size lead ball on the cable end but without the spring assembled onto the cable end. It appears Ford had assembled the spring to the cable end and THEN put on the larger lead ball which hooked into the slot on the brake mechanism. So the question is "How do we get the smaller diameter spring onto the cable with the larger diameter lead ball end?" Still stumped. Also, importantly, why won't the new spring fit through the new cable. What do you do if your mechanic threw out the old spring or it got damaged or whatever?! Thanks again.
Take the cable and lay it over the 2nd coil of the spring and then just wrap the spring around the cable till the cable is completely in the spring. Do the same to remove the old cable. This way you don't have to worry about the lead end.
