I bought a bottle of 50 coolant test strips from NAPA (Wix filtration products). The strips have three bands. One for temperature, PH and Nitrite. I understand the first two but what is the importance of the Nitrite?
I own two all aluminum engines and my truck has some aluminum parts with an aluminum radiator so I wish to prevent any corrosion I can.
Nitrites and/or several other additives (silicates,) form a thin layer on the inside of the cooling system which inhibits damaging corrosion. All commercial coolants use one or more. If you do regular coolant changes you really don't need to use test strips. Diesel fleets use them a lot. They use chemically charged cooling system filters too.
I just got the same bottle of 50 test strips. I looked at the websight and I think I understand the concept. Just also looking for some insight or experience anyone else has had with these NAPA # 4106 coolant test strips. They are Wix brand, so if anyone has anymore insight on them, please let me know..Dave
I also have read about SCA levels.....My test strips mentioned above only have Nitrite levels in parts per million....freeze point and PH level....Are these test strips no good and should I try another brand or is one of these numbers one that I can use in place of SCA levels??
