Backup Lights?

My backup lights "reverse" lights do not work, I know that they are on the same fuse as my windshield wipers dont work but that is becasue the switch was broken and i am getting a new one. All my tail lights are new and working well except when I put the truck in reverse than the reverse lights do not turn on. I checked all the grounding and made sure they are grounded well. The fuse is perfectly fine, is their anything else that would be wrong?

What year truck? What engine & trans?

If it's a '78 or '79 with a C6 auto, it's quite likely the neutral safety switch is gunked up or worn out. It also actuates the backup lights. It's located on the left side of the trans. Could also be bad wiring somewhere, including going into the switch.

I'd be willing to bet that it's the switch. After years and years of service they get crud built up inside. You can also trace the wires from the switch back to where they plug into the harness under the hood to test. The switch has 4 wires, two for the starting circuit, two for the backup lights. When I had to clean out my switch the truck started fine, the backup lights just didn't work.

If the switch is the problem you can either buy a new one ($35-$50 at parts stores) or try to clean yours. I'm cheap, so I cleaned mine. I used a can of brake parts cleaner for the worst junk, sprayed down the outside and back inside the switch. Then I poured alcohol inside while working the switch with my thumb. You'll have to remove the switch from the trans first. It's not hard.

Here's the thread where I asked about removing the switch. Link. Has good info and diagrams about the switch.

Hope this helps.
