Got a 2000 E150 5.4L w/ 76k on the clock and the engine started to buck a few days ago. I originally thought it might have been the Ujoints but tonight the Check Engine light came on. Seems the Van has lost a bit of power. I tried keeping it in park with the brake light on and it seems to keep bucking/surging.
Any thoughts, plugs, wiring, fuel pump, ??
Thanks again,
Time to do the basic, cheap stuff. Clean the MAF/IAC/Throttle body, change the air filter, change the fuel filter, and have the codes read. The lack of power may be from "limp home mode", but if you haven't done the other yet, might as well eliminate them.
You're missing on one cylinder, betcha a dollar. Have it scanned at your local parts store and you should get a P30X code if I'm right. The "X" will be which cylinder is missing.
FYI, the IAC = Idle air control valve. Good guess if it won't idle and the engine keeps dying, but this sounds completely different.
Took her to Napa and I have a cylinder #1 missing, biting the bullet today to take her to the dealer for a plug and boot change, I was planning on doing this anyway and will send me back about $348.00. Anything else I should have them do while there in there ?
Holy crap! $348 is a complete hose for that job! By the way, I don't know how hard it is to access the #1 on a van, but in my truck it's super easy access. It's closest to the bumper on the passenger side. Costs me $40 usually to do it myself (I've replaced 2 COP's and changed all 8 spark plugs twice).
Check some independant shops. I've heard of people pricing them for less than $200. $300 is actually average for a dealer doing all 8 plugs.
I just had a local shop (national chain) price having all 8 checked at $450 as one is missing. They told me they could not tell which cylinder was missing though - so they had to chedk all 8 . . . is that possible?

Just cost me $64 (including tax) for a cop at one of the least expensive parts places in galveston. Took less than a half hour to change the no. 3 cop, and that was taking my time because this was the first time of doing anything to the motor.
If it were me, I'ld buy the plugs and cop and do it at home.
