Drain Plug Leak

I noticed under my truck (F250 6.0 Diesel) a little oil it looks like it is comming from the drain plug. I checked and it was tight so I tightend it a little more. I recently changed the oil for the first time. Has any one experienced this problem

Did the little washer/o-ring fall off the plug? There should be one.

I don't know what the part number is and I can't count the number of times I've had to pull the plug twice because I've found it in the bottom of the pan after changing oil in several different bikes, cars and trucks. Duh! You'd think I'd learn. Now I've got a Fumoto valve and now I have to remember to close it after draining the oil.

the washer can also get worn, but I'm at 55,000 plus now, with 5,000 mile changes, not counting the extra three that were done when the injector failed, and no leaks. You might have left the washer off. It only takes a little bit of torque to tighten that thing. I like to call it "snug", no leverage on the wrench, just using my wrist. You should be able to tell if the washer is up against the oil pan. It is the exact size as the base of the drain plug though, but you should be able to tell if it is there without pulling the plug.

Thw drain plug washer is made of copper and is designed to "crush" when tourqued. After awhile, the washer flattens out to much and a new one is needed. Until I got my Fumoto valve, I just changed out the washer every other oil changed and for $3 - $5 for a new washer... big deal.... but no leaks!!!!

They do wear out due to their design and being made of copper...

Buy a new one and don't worry.... leak fixed.

Some have reported here that if a friend takes a shop-vac and sticks it on the oil filler tube... there is enough suction to hold the oil while one quickly undoes the drain plug and repalces the plug and/or washer!!!

Never tried it... but it might work.... anyone with "real-world" experience doing it here on the boards???

Go ahead I'll watch. Best to just dump the oil in a clean pan do the washer and pour it back in.

Arrow Minor change out . . .

If you do it when it is cold just stick your thumb over the whole while you slip a new washer on the bolt, then stick the bolt back in.

Lose a little but no big deal.

Who wants diesel oil in their shop vac. You know, even if it works, it will coat the filter in it. Either way it will be a mess in the shop vac . . .

The copper washer can be reused for quite a number of times if you have access to a torch. Heat it up cherry red and dip in cold water and it restores the compressability. It's similar to annealing.

Cool... but I like going to the dealer parts department from time to time and for $5.00... I get a new washer. Doing 5,000 mile oil changes... I pass my Ford dealer many times before my next oil change.... so I just prefer to stop in.

In a pinch... I guess it woud work... thanks.

Buy the Fumoto valve and never worry about a gasket or a leak ever again. You don't need a wrench anymore either, just flip it open to drain the oil and then flip it closed. Almost as easy as showing a Dmax your tailgate, just not nearly as pleasing.

The shop vac idea could get interesting, especially after a couple cold ones....

I can't remember on my 6.0 but on my Honda Civic's they recommend changing the aluminum washer with every change. Good luck
