I love my truck but after it's clutch went out last week and fixed, and I think the head casket is cracked or something now. First stream came out of the vents then smoke!
How much would it cost to fix? Can I do it or a mechnic?
Do you have a sweet smell inside the cabin? It kinda sounds like your heater core is leaking. If you see any signs of a leak on the carpet under the dash, or smell coolant, or the fog sticks to the windshield and is difficult to get off/leaves an oily film, these are pointing toward a heater core leak. It's not an expensive part, I don't know how difficult it is to replace, knowing the year/engine/equipment (IE A/C) would help determine whether or not this is a job you can tackle yourself.
Sweet smell is almost always coolant related. Do you have any white(ish) smoke coming out of the tail pipe? Generally if you are loosing coolant and you see white smoke, it is a blown head "gasket". This "can" turn into a MAJOR ordeal. Trust me, I had the worst head gasket experience I have ever seen a few months ago. The down side is, unless you have a "hook-up" it will run you quite a bit of $$$. The gasket it'self is cheap, but the labor to replace it is major. Under ideal circumstances the gasket (or gaskets if it is a v6) can be changed at home in a 1/2 a day or less. If you have the 2.9L you will want to look out for a cracked head. Full truck details would help.
For a heater core, like BSmitty said it will usually leave a wet floor on the passengers side. It is not a real expensive part, but it is a pain in the butt to replace. If you want to work on it as you can, I would loop the 2 heater hoses together so there is nothing going through the core. At this point you shouldn't smell it anymore and you can remove the core at your own pace. Obviously you won't have any heat while there is no coolant going through the core. It is under the dash on the passenger's side. Get a $15 service manual at the parts store and go to town.
