Hello everyone and thanks to your previous replies. Now I am wondering what the timing specs would be for the ford 390 c.i.d. with a edelbrock # 1405 650cfm carb on it. I also have casting numbers for the intake if anyone would like to decode them. Thanks so much.
Total mechanic advance should be in the 30° to 36°, even though 36° may cause you to ping on regular gas. Depending on you advance set up in you dist. (could be anywhere from 10° to 18° advance in the dist for 20° to 36° at the crank) , your initial could be any where from 0° to 16°. Factory is usually 6° to 10° depending on the engine.
I think I am lost on this stuff. How do you check the distributor advance? I know how to check it at full advance on the crank, but not sure about the other. My crank has a mark on it at 6. Was that my original setting? My distributor is a vacuum advance Fomoco unit with the Petronix conversion kit. Running MSD 6AL and Blaster Coil. I don't want to take someone else's thread so if offend anyone tell me and I'll start another one.
Several ways to do it. Easiest is to check full mechanical advance (disconnect the vacuum). Now check initial. The difference is your total advance. The best way is to remove cap and rotor. Remove the reluctor, don't loose the roll pin that makes it turnwith the shaft. There are 2 screws holding down the plate the pick up is on. Remove screws and plate. See what advance curve you have. See the following link for infor and recurving your dist. Don't worry that it says 460. All the Ford dist.s are the same inside.
I always check my timing with and without the vacuum. I also check the curve as stated above. I traded in the old points and went with Pertronix and made all the timing much much more reliable and simple.

I said I had the pertronix kit, but I haven't got it installed yet. I have heard good thing s about it though. Should be here Friday. Is vacuum advance good enough or is mechanical advance better?
The dist. has mechanicl advance built in to it, it is not optional. The vacuum is the optional advance. It is a mileage enhancing feature (even though some seem to think it a cheater system to get their engine to idle with a lot of advance).

I guess I was confused cause you can buy aftermarket dizzy with mechanical or vacuum advance. Thanks for clearing that up.
Ok...Wasn't sure about all the details on a dizzy. We set the timing in my motor to between 8 and 10 on the initial timing and ran it down the road. Does much better in that range then at the 4 to 6 range (factory). Still need some more tuning but much better then before. Thanks for the help!!!
