I just picked up a 03 7.3 Excursion with 100K on it. The only thing is it requires, in my opinion, an excessive amount of cranking to start it. I would say it takes about 3 seconds to start. This morning it was in the 40's, and actually started better cold. It doesn't matter if it's hot, in fact I think it takes just a little longer when it's warm. Once it's started, it runs, idles great. I already read through the winter/rough starting thread, and did a lot of "starting searches", but they didn't seem to be like this. Any ideas?
May sound stupid, but its just one of my personal experiences just the same. Before my batteries took a dump it would take a hair longer for her to fire. I have also had the same thing happen on every Ford truck I have owned before the starter went as well.
At first I was thinking it was spinning plenty fast, but now that you mention it, it does seem to start only after the starter really spools up. I will have them checked today, thanks,
Well, if it is the starter.....next thing will be the big, "CLICK" then it will turn over. Then as time goes on you'll get the consistent click, then you'll have to give it a hit to jarr it loose to get it to turn over.
After that, you'll just be stranded if you don't replace it.
yeah, I never had to go through this before. LOL!
Good luck, hopefully it's something stupid. Sounds like it to me.
when i got my new 02 PSD 3 weeks ago i had the same issues... when i tried to start it up in my driveway it took a few seconds longer than i thought it should have. the next morning it cranked once, but it was dead after that... it would try and crank and not fire. so i yanked the batteries and had them tested. both were under charged. so with winter on the way and since they were the original batteries, i just broke down and payed the $120 on 2 new batteries. all in all it was a good investment and it put my mind at ease.
but they did go and die quickly, as if i had left something on overnight or something, but it does take ALOT of juice to crank our PSD's!
No dice on the batteries. I replaced both since they were the originals. Still has the same issue. I don't know about the starter, but I guess that's the next suspect. It doesn't make any clicking sounds, and it turns it, but it only fires after it spools up to a faster revolution. So far it hasn't left me stranded, I just want to get it right before winter gets here.
I changed the fuel filter and not impressed with what I found. THere was an extra o-ring that appeared to left from another change just sitting at the bottom of the bowl. Also, the inside of the bowl area was filthy, the filter was black and actually starting to come apart around the sides, so it obviously hadn't been changed in a long time. I'm concerned dirt may have got past the filter now. It starts better, but still not like it should. I am going to take it to a diesel shop tomorrow and see what they say.
i'd just run DK in it for 5 or 6 fillups to clean out the fuel system. change the filter again, it'll probably be dirty from all the gunk that the DK cleans off.
i did that to my PSD when i got it last month and it actually make a noticable difference.
thanks.
hey sledneck, glad to hear the filt. seemed to make some difference. try running the diesel kleen for a few tanks and change the filter again. hopefully your trucks past owner wasn't filling up w/ filthy fuel so you'll be alright. i really think this will help alot. it kleens the injectors ect so you'll be misting fuel instead of dripping it. i change my fuel filter every 20k miles. but you can go longer. also ck your air filter, you need air too. keep us informed!!!!
Should Be Pretty Clean, No Dirt In Mine Ever! But Have Seen Some Funny Colored Fuel, Think may have been in the Heat Of Summer If Memory Serves Me Right.
If It Persists In Beeing Dirty, you May Need To Pull The Tank And Clean It Out BUT GOOD, sorry !!!!
You are not the only one to find oring presents in the bowl. You can dump the fuel in a can and throw it in your tank and degreas and rinse the bowl. Let it air dry before putting in a new filter and turning key. No one has an ugly fuel bowl like mine, bleach in the fuel will make you turn blue with anger.
