Putting on the new MBRP exhaust on my 04 SD. What is the torque for the Bolt/nut that connects the new downpipe to the turbo flange ? Also does the cat need to be re-installed or is it legal to go without one since it is a diesell
Welding is WAY better than any clamp. Use the clamps to get it fitted and do a test drive. Make any adjustment and weld the beast. And if it came with a CAT, it is a Federal violation to remove it. If you're caught that is. LindenBruce
you guys dont understand his question. it's the marmon clamp that connects the exhaust to his turbo. you would have to pull the cab to run a full bead of weld around the pipe. anyways, if i would have welded my exhaust, i would have been screwed. i've taken parts or all of my exhaust system off several times. i dont choose to weld.
to your answer, the torque is about 10 lb-ft i think. the rule of thumb on a marmon clamp (v-style) is to make it snug, and a turn more. or at least that's my theory.
remember to hang all of the pipes and put the clamps in place. then, start at the downpipe, tighten back to the tailpipe, making sure that the pipe doesn't contact anything, you could get some funny noises otherwise. if you have any questions about the install just PM me, i havent done it on a 6.0 but i do know the concept.
i would ditch the cat personally, if your truck doesn't get smog tested in your state. there isn't a "test" to check to see if the cat. conv. is functioning, it's usually a visual check to make sure it's there.
it sounds even more badass with it out. here, install your exhaust back TO the cat, and then go for a test drive with the windows down. then come back (cool it down) and then install the cat and the rest of the exhaust. then see what you like better. you can get "cat delete" pipes.
My 2 cents.
I agree with Strokin on the cat. Leave it out. I have an 06 6.0, I ran a 4" silverline from turbo back, left out the cat, and absoulutly love the sound. Deep tone when gettin on it, very loud whisle when idling around. I believe the cat would muffle some of this, plus less restriction = more power, so I am told. I tightened the clamp on the turbo snug and then made another round or so. I have had the exhaust on for approx. 4 months now and have had no problems what so ever. I just put on a k & n cold air intake as well, I can't tell alot of difference in power, but can hear more air flow, which in turn makes the turbo sound awesome.
Good Luck with yours!
If memory serves it 22 ft lbs, very snug with a 1/4er inch drive is plenty. Welding is a personal choice, but I agree with strokin_it7.3 if you ever need to do any removal it'll be a PITA for sure and the stock system uses clamps too and they do fine. In fact if a U bolt clamp is installed correctly it actually crimp locks the two pipes together. Plus if you got the MBRP system that has a seperate cat pipe then you can eliminate it for racing and off road and reinstall it for any trips to the dealer, keeps them happier etc! MBRP makes systems that accept the cat, a cat back and also off road system with no cat provision, you didn't say which you had etc. Don't know if you got it from us or not, but if you have any questions let us know.
Is there an exhaust out there that will give your truck a good rumble sound like a gas engine? If not what would be the closest brand for a gas sound(other than a gas engine.) Thats the only thing i miss for owning a diesel. Love my 250 just want a awsome sounding exhaust.
Thanks

Simply remove the muffler...install muffler delete pipe. For test purposes, just remove the muffler and t/p from behind the cat to muffler pipe and drive around. You'll find it isn't TOO loud at all...but sounds like old gas big block V8 when you get on it.
BPofMD, Thanks for the info and is it just simply a part called a muffler delete pipe and where might someone get this(still new to the diesel thing)
Thanks
