i have an 82 f150 .. it has given me a few problems but right after i put a new engine in it my tranny pump started going out and my bellhousing cracked around the entirety of it so im looking to get a new tranny for it what i was wondering is if its possible to convert a c6 auto made for a 2wd into one that will work with a 4wd ... im not exactly sure how the tail shaft and everything is assembled and what all it would take if you could do it the reason being is that there is an abundance of 2wd trannys floating around where im from and none that are 4wd but i may just have to give up and order a new tranny in would prefer not to do that at this point but any help would be appreciated
thanx in advance

A 4x2 trans can be converted to a 4x4 trans, but it isn't really easy.
To do it EVERYTHING needs to come out of the trans. Start the reassembly with a 4x4 output shaft replacing the 4x2 shaft, and rebuild the entire trans.
Hey, this is good info Casey. Im in a similar situation where Im looking to replace my C6 3 speed with a transmission that has overdrive. I also have 4x4. I dont have the option though to do a rebuild on a 4x2....but was wondering if someone could tell me the Trans code I need to be looking for?
I have an '85, with the K transmission code on the sticker in the door jam. I also have access to 2 salvage yards here in Evansville Indiana. This is my first Ford so Im not quite sure what I could use. Obviously it should be from a 4x4, and my Chilton manual lists these transmission options:
G=Automatic C4
W=Automatic C5
J=Automatic FMX
T=Automatic Overdrive
and of course it lists my K code C6. So my question is this: which of these transmissions will get me an overdrive gear? Im so tired of driving around at 50-55 and winding out my C6. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks.
Steve
The only one of those that has an overdrive is the T code, Automatic Overdrive (AOD.)
That engine do you have? The AOD isn't going to live behind anything larger than a 302.
Thanks for the reply Casey,
Ive got a 4.9 I6 and dont plan on going much bigger, but you never know. In stating that I wanted overdrive, I guess I just meant anything more than 3 speeds. Is it safe to assume that the overdrive gear in most automatic transmissions is fourth gear? And what then are the characteristics of the C4, C5,and FMX? Are these all quite similar to my C6? If so, I dont understand why Ford would make 4 variations of 3 speed transmissions. Granted I understand the concept of having it in conjunction with a 4x4 set up/farm& work truck, but I still think Im missing something here. Even so, I'll be looking for the T code at the j-yard.
Also, what transmissions did the larger motors come with,(betweeen '80-'86) or should I say, are more suitable with motors larger than the 302? Sorry for all the questions, still trying to make heads or tails of Ford transmissions offered.
The C4, C5, C6, and FMX were all 3 speed transmissions.
The FMX was an old design trans, from either the late 50's or early 60's.
The C4 was a light duty version of the C6. The C5 was a C4 with a lockup torque converter.
You're missing the C3. That was and even lighter duty 3 speed trans, designed for four cylinder and smaller six cylinder engines.
Fourth gear is an overdrive ratio in the AOD. It is 0.667:1.
All larger engines between '80 and '86 used the C6 transmission.
thanx for the information i pulled my tranny the other day and found that my u joint out the back of the tranny was completely mutilated hmmmm 2monts and 500 miles on it odd but im thinking thats where most of my vibrations were from that caused my bell housing to crack and break into 2 pieces so yea im looking into finding a new c6 cuz im not exactly so excited to jump into rebuilding 1 ... and im j/w out of the shift lever i have 2 electeric wires what do these control and why are they wired into the tranny ... makes no sense to me had to unplug a plug along the frame its outta a 82 f150 didnt think the trannys ran anything elec at that age
