Thumbs up Wiring harness

What do you guys reccomend in the line of wiring harnesses? I have a fairly stock '56 F100 that has SORRY wiring & because I am in Australia, I either have to custom wire my truck or get a harness from the USA. I want a good harness that is easy to install. Quality, reliability and ease of installation is what I'm looking for.

This is a great site and you don't know how much an Aussie classic truck owner like myself appreciates the help you guys give!! Cheers.

I have used Ron Francis and Painless. I found both easy to install and good quality. There is quite a selection of other wiring harnesses on the market now (Autowire, EZ Wire, Haywire, etc.) but I have no experience with them. I have not heard complaints about any of them but perhaps others with experience can elaborate. You say your truck is "fairly stock". I don't know what that encompasses but you might be able to wire it with an aftermarket "stock" type wiring harness which would be easier but if you ever plan to modify the truck further, the aftermarket "non-stock" harness would be the way to go. .

I have used the Ron Francis and EZ Wire. I prefer the RF for ease of installation and good instructions but the EZ Wire is less costly. I also like the quality of the RF a little better. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. What I mean by "fairly stock" is that it is I'm not really going to run too many extras except for a CD stereo and maybe A/C one day so the the "non-stock" harness option sounds like a good idea. Cheers.

The aftermarket harness is the way to go since the 56 did not have a fuse panel originally, it is difficult to add accessories. Someone else on here from "the other side of the world" recently purchased an EZ Wire kit from a distributor on ebay because they would ship overseas. The EZ Wire kit is a quality product at a 1/3 the price of the more heavily advertised brands.

I checked out the harnesses and found that the EZ was less expensive than some of the others, which is something we have to consider especially with shipping to our country and also the $ exchange rate. Cheers!

Wait until you get it! If you were paying by the pound (kilo?) it would be about as cheap as hamburger, I couldn't believe what it weighed when mine arrived.

I have another couple of questions. There is the colour harness and the black harness, any difference there when it comes to installation? What did the hareness weigh as I can work out USPS shipping pretty easy then. Thanks mate!

I'd guess ~ 15-20#s The black harness is good if you are going for the stealth look under the hood. The colored one makes trouble shooting easier later on, uses std GM wire colors. I'd suggest when it comes lay all the wires out straight, then sort out the ones you will use and group by area of the vehicle they will go to, dash and interior, under hood, front lighting, rear lighting, not going to be used presently etc. finally coil and tie the groups together temporarily. The wires you will not be using, rather than cutting them off or coiling them under the dash, remove them along with their connector from the fuse block. Pull the fuse and look carefully at the connector the wire is attached to (magnafication and a strong light might help). There is a metal tab on the connector that locks it into the fuse block. If you hold that tab in with a thin screwdriver blade it will release from the block with the wire still attached when pulled lightly. Now coil up the wires and the extra fuses and put them away for a time when you might decide to add more accessories.

Definitely get the harness with the colored wires. I once helped a friend chase some electrical gremlins in his truck which been wired by a previous owner with with all 12 gauge red wire.

What a nightmare that was. The only way to tell where the wires went was to tug on one and see which one moved on the other end...not fun. Even though the all black wires are probably marked as to where they go, it would still be easier to install and service a colored wire system.

The black harnesses are labeled. As with the colored harness, each wire is is labeled along its length about every 6". Even with that, I prefer color as it simplifies things for me

Hi aussie1,

I recently bought an EZ wire harness off of some chap on Ebay. I went for the all black as I want the clean look. But as has been stated the wires are all marked every 5-6" so shouldnt be any trouble tracing. I live in the UK and the Harrness was shipped USPS and arrived here in about 7 days, I was very pleased with it. I havent fitted it yet as that is a bit of a way off, but it looks to be good quality.

The only thing that could be better are the instructions, they are a bit light. But still ok.

If I remember correctly, I think that the shipping was about $65 to the UK.

Hope that helps,

Cheers
Lee

Thanks again for all the advice, I have been in contact with the EZ guy on ebay, his response has been excellent. I haven't heard anything bad about the EZ harness so will probably go with it. Cheers from OZ!
