it will run but i would not want to unplug it just on a hunch because they are not fun to get to. pull the egr valve out and check it and see what it looks like. it should be sooty, not carboned clogged. if it is carboned, replace it. i have cleaned 2 egr valves and both started sticking with me and when they do this you could push the truck faster than it goes.

Just to hazard a guess about these, for lack of a better word, "hanging" turbos. From what everybody has said they seem to surge untill they've warmed up. Could it be, possibly, that either the bearing pack in the turbos themselves have glazed cooked oil on them? That would explain the surging they have while cold (because the gummy crud hasn't cooked off of them) and running normally after warmup (because the bearings are hot enough that the glazing melts somewhat) allowing the turbos to spin freely?
it could be the egr valve just sticking. try to get it to act up. when it does pull the egr valve very carefully. inspect the bottom area and see if the valve is seated or not.

Is this possible?

you are almost there. the turbo has internal vanes that open and close depending on when boost is going to be needed. three parts are usuall suspects. the vgt is oil controlled. the vgt opperates a arm that moves a unison ring which moves the vanes inside the turbo. all of these have to swivel freely. the turbo is spinning up like crazy, its just bleeding off back pressure cutting boost due to the vanes being wide open, or the turbo overboosts and then poots when you let off the accelerator due to the vanes sticking shut. i have personnally fixxed some of these trucks just by driving the snot out of these trucks and telling the owners to do the same. when it gets warm it loosens these deposits so it gets better but it keeps repeating it self untill it really gets bad and them we have to clean them at the dealer. all we do is get rid of the deposists which can be done with some cetane booster and some leadded plus in the right foot.
Its just weird that the truck only surges with it is ideling and not moving. As soon as it start to move it quits which make it really weird. The idel drops down to about 400 or below and it just sound like my Camaro with the 110 lsa cam. It just shake and lopes like a SOB. I did get a call from a friend of mine who is a diesel mechanic and he told me to unplug the EGR valve while it is surging to see if it will stop. Can I do this and will it hurt anything.
Thats what my dad thought it might be but not sure. I wish I had someway to check them before I carry it somewhere to see what is causing the problem. I tried the EGR today and it didn't seem to work. Actually it made the idle drop just a little bit lower. But if it comes down to it then I'll carry it to my local diesel shop.
I have a good place to go but they are swamped with work right now. They have worked on all three of my 7.3 strokes. I need my truck so thats why I am asking people on here if they have had the same issue and how it was fixed.
