I'm currently using Cingular as my cell provider, but I am living a bit beyond my means with the plan. I have a PDA phone using full internet, a bunch of text messages, and the extra line my mother uses. I'm thinking I could save a bunch of money and get better reception at work by switching to Nextel and going with some fairly basic plan. Right now I'm paying $130 a month with Cingular and I'm thinking I could get a decent plan for $70 with Nextel. Anyone have any experience with Nextel they could lend me...especially if they are in the SoCal area?
My company uses Nextel. I live near Memphis & the service is spotty. Its ok around the city but its no good outside of it. I carry my Cingular too & it will work almost anywhere. Nextel is cheaper expecally if you use the radio instead of dialing the phone. I believe the two way radio has unlimited minutes. Check the coverage before you switch.
The company I work for here in Las Vegas, uses Nextel. We use direct connect, and it works well. But the standard phone service is not so good here. You get a lot of dropped calls. We are also on tele-nav-trak, so we can't sneak off for any two martini lunches with out the big guys knowing!
I have used Nextel for about 5 years now. Togather for my wife and I's phone, the bill runs $140 a month. I have the "Free Incoming 500" plan, which means that all of my incoming calls are free, all night and weekend minutes are free as well as direct connect is free, and I have 500 daytime minutes to place phone calls. My wife has the same plan except in the 300 minute form. In addition we also have insurance on both phones (these phones are pricey), and free mobile to mobile. Neither my wife or I have gone over our minutes, and I have used my phone for work for the last two years. Now that I have a job that provides all communication for you, I may drop my plan down. Service has been decent with a small decline after Boost mobile made its introduction on Nextels iden towers. If you do decide to switch over, steer clear of the i560, its junk, try to get an older i530 or so if possible, those old phones are pretty solid and indestructible.

Nextel isn't a bad service but be aware that the service can be a bit troublesome especially if you travel alot. Service is no good once you get off main drags. You can be out of service for mile and I mean a few hundred. Since Nextel is strictly digital and doesn't utilize anyones towers but theirs. Recently drove up from Texas to Colorado and had no cover for hours. to make a long story short, it's no good once you get off the main highways or in rural areas.
