My five speed has been acting up lately. About two months ago it started to grind a little on the shift into third gear and was sometimes tuff to get it into gear. Now it has started a new thing, when I am driving in third and let off the gas it will pop out of gear. Any ideas? Is my tranny dead?
Sounds like the synchronizer went bad. The gear grinding wore the clutching teeth down to the point at which the jolt from letting of the gas will take it out of gear, time for an overhaul.
I'm kind of in the same boat. (grinding into 3rd) What would an overhaul run if tranny was delivered to a shop? Same 5 spd as above (1995) (no removal or re-install) I've been contemplating this for a while.
its not overly hard just lay out the pieces in order as you remove them. I normaly rebuild twin countershaft trans. out of semis so Im not sure of prices of parts or labor if someone else does it. Ford probably the best place for the parts, replace anything that even looks slightly questionable. The synchro. its self will probably be the most exspensive part, last one i bought was like $227.00 but that was for a five speed clarke out of a strait truck, so im sure it will be cheaper. Also as stated a manual would be your best friend you might even be able to get one at the library, ive. seen them there before. if and when you go for parts take the serial # with you because,at least with semi. trans, there not all the same, some have different design levels. With time and patience you can do it.
