Horn Problem

Hi,
I have been lurking the past few months following the various modifications and Ranger problems. Now I have a problem of my own. I picked up a 1995 3.0l Extended Cab Ranger to replace a 1990 Ranger that I wore out. Been fairly happy with it tho' the electrical system sure is differnt from the 90. Today the horn decided to cease functioning. I do get it to work intermitently but mostly it doesn't function.

Using a Haynes manual for 1995 I have disconnected the
horn and jumpered the horn to the battery, it works. I checked the fuse and ohmed it out and it's ok. I changed relays, nothing. In the relay I have 12v present at slot 1 and 5 which is I believe is correct. I ohmed out the wire between slot 3 and the horn connector and I have continuity. I would think I should have continuity between slot 2 and ground when the steering wheel horn button is depressed but I don't. Is this assumption correct? The manual makes a reference to a ground at G101 for the horn switch but where would I be looking for that? Also, how hard would the horn switch or switches be to change out? It also mentions a clocksping assembly in the circuit but I don't see any other mention of them in the manual. What are these and are they something I would want to fool with? Any help would sure be appreciated.

Mark

Welcome to FTE Mark.

Sounds like you've been busy, doing some good troubleshooting on this one.

Seeing as how the horn works when wired to the battery & the fuses & relay check good & you say the horn is intermittent, I also agree those pesky clock springs should be on your suspect list.
The clock springs are under the steering wheel horn cover.

If you have a air bag, be sure to properly deactivate it, before diving in.
Check out the "Tech Info" thread atop this forums main page, on how to do it. Other good info there too!!!!

After browsing thru a lot of clockspring threads I am afraid you are
probably right about the clockspring assembly. I was hoping for a simple ground problem. Looks like it is off to the shops.
Thanks.
