'62 F100 Stepside: Broken Driveshaft

I have a couple of questions related to a truck that I bought last week.

The truck has a recently replaced rear axle and gearbox. Apparently when the work was done, the driveshaft turned out to be too short. As a result, the splined sleeve attatched to the front U-joint has shattered.

The splined sleeve is about 1-1/4" in diameter and 3-1/2" long inside, with (I think) 16 splines. The shaft is 61-1/2" from weld to weld. When it was in place, it only went about 1" onto the male spline!

My first question is; where can I get a new yoke/spline to replace the broken one? I am in the San Francisco bay area, and have not been able to locate one in junkyards yet.

Second question; Am I likely to be able to find a driveshaft that is an inch or two longer than the one I have? Am i Likely to need to have one altered, and how much should that cost?

Finally, considering that the shaft is now too short, is it likely that the gearbox and rear axle are wrong for the truck? The gearbox is marked "OA25", and the diff. is marked "4689-A2". (I don't know if those aare the important numbers or not...)

Thanks for any input, Gregor

I had a driveshaft re-tubed, meaning they used the ends and splines from my original drive shaft and replaced the tube and rebalanced for $125.00. When this was done they also checked the splines for wear, so I assume that this was a part that they could get. Look in the yellow pages under drive shaft repair or ask around at the auto parts stores for recomendations.

Getting a new yoke doesn't sound like it will correct your problem unless you have the drive shaft re-tubed to the correct length. It also might be that when the modifications were made to your driveline the drive-shaft which was used could also be incorrect for this application. I am assuming that the end you are referring to is on the tranny end. What type of tranny do you have in your truck. I think the other reply which suggested a driveshaft shope is not a bad idea either.

The only thing I know about the tranny is that it is a three speed, labeled "QA25". Thanks for the input. Sounds like re-tubing is my only option, and the shop will probably know where to get the new spline... I hope.
