Need help with soft plug.Help

I have an inline straight six in my 95 f-150.Im mechanicly inclined but not a motor head.So I came to you guys for advice.Soft plug under the manafold sprung a leak.Truck nd motor have over 200,000 on them.I can see the plug but not sure if I can get to it to pull it out.I hate to start pulling the manafold and other things cause evrything is rusty and I know it will nickle and dime me by the time im done.I was told i could just punch the old plug into the jacket, install a expandable plug and everything would be fine.Is this true. Will it restrict flow if i punch it in as apposed to tearing the motor down to pull it out. Please guys help me out here.Just want the truck to get me through the winter.

If never seen this "soft plug" on mine but if it's on the intake somewhere and you punch it into the intake then most likely it will get sucked into the engine.

I think he is talking about a freeze out plug below the manifolds in the block itself.

Oh. Well you could punch it in the block and leave it and it might not hurt anything but I wouldn't do it on my truck. Just get a punch or screwdriver or something and make a whole in the center and then shove some needle nose pliers in to pull it out. That's how I've gotten mine out on engines before.

If it's bad enough to leak it will be easy to punch a hole in it. Then use the upper jaw of a channel-lock plier to pry it out. Replace it with a new brass plug, coat the mating surface with black permatex.

if it is a frost plug you are refering to they are easy to remove, maybe tricky to get at depending on where it is located. You can buy aftermarket axpandable rubber plugs or the metal tap in original tipe. Both are easy to install. I personaly like the rubber style. When removing the failed plug don't let debree fall into the hole it could cause problems in other area's of the cooling system. Also inspect the rest of your frost plugs for the same problems. I suggest replacing them all they are an inexpencive part.

I would replace them all - If ones is going they are all most likley ready to go - this problem is usually caused by running only water in the cooling system.

Good point. I think that using brass is the most permanent repair.
