There are three things here.
1. The digital speedo goes out suggests it's a dash problem or power as it's seperate from PATS.
2. If you turn the ignition on and the lamp flashes for failure, wait a couple minutes and it might flash a two digit code that will suggest what the problem involves.
3. You can do a self test of the dash micro-processor driven system that may give some more info on the problem. You need the HEC codes and info to interpet the test steps.
An fyi; The Pats communicates with the PCM so you can't get around this unless it is programmed out, in the PCM. The info is contained in the PCM software VID block. If that info is corrupted, a cel lamp and code 1639 will be the result.
Pats also runs through the instrument cluster. When programming a new key with the ngs, you first note the type of cluster.
Ranger354 My truck has been great up to this point. I've never blocked a boat ramp except when I was learning how to back the trailer down the ramp. This thing is really starting to act up now. I have the PATS problem, code is showing a bad O2 censor, it started cutting out today and the service engine light was rapidly flashing ( I put the gas to the floor and it stopped both the sputtering and the service engine light went off ), and now I'm smelling antifreeze when I get out after a drive. I don't know how much effort I'm willing to put forth. I may be looking at some newer body stlye F150s soon. A 2004 model crewcab would be nice.
bigred, look at a hose leak over #4 plug.
Thats two problems at the same time fitting you discriptions.
The flashing lamp it telling you the cats are getting raw gas from a cylinder that no longer fires from whatever has caused it.
Hi all. Just got back to looking at the truck. I finally got a code from the "theft" light today. I am getting a 16 code. 1 flash then a pause then 6 flashes then a pause and the sequence starts over. Any ideas? Please let me know before i take it to the dealer next week. what bothers me most is it seems to be something i can't fix!! Thanks for all the help!!
Welcome back.
Code 16 is indicating a faulty link between the PATS module and the PCM.
Some other background info.
1. if the PCM has v-id block data corruption, there would be a P1639 code set in PCM.
2. if the dash diagnostics were done, you might see a code 1147 or 1262.
Both these would point to the same fault of no communications between the PATS module and the PCM.
If no PCM code, there will not be a P1639 so that fault could be ruled out.
Then it's a link issue.
If no known work was done, then a dealer diagnostic and inspection would have to be done.
Best I can do to inform you of what kind of problem it is and what some of the ways there are, it can show, to varify it.
If not to serious, it still alows you to start the truck but some times it will not depending on exactly how the fault is structured.
If you notice for instance the speedo is off by as much as 6 mph, the vid block is complete with full data but it is incorrect data for gear ratio and the like.
Good luck.
Check to see if you have a PCM power relay. If you do swap it with another relay in the box of the same type, preferrably to something that isnt used all the time like a wiper relay. Ive seen this pattern on vehicles that lose PCM power relay at startup causing theft lamp to flash and dashes at the odometer.
Woo Hoo I think we got it. I followed Homers advice and switched the relays. Now the odometer works but still no start. I switched them back and called on my years of Ford mechanical knowledge and pecked / hit the offending relay with a wrench. I heard the fuel pump come on. Duplicated the failure/fix many times, quick trip to the dealer for relays and I think its back in business!! Thanks to all for the help. Just an FYI, I didn’t have a diagram/layout for the fuse box, but it was the one the passenger side closest to the engine. Thanks to all for the help saved me a chunk of change and my pride.
My 99 f150 did the same thing, It ended up being the power wire to the computer. When I installed an aftermarket fan I was pulling and putting fuses back in. I must of pushed the fuse in and the connector for the fuse pushed out causing the power circuit for the computer to open. With no power to the computer the pats system will not let the truck engage and will say it does not reconize the keys.
This may sound silly, but have you had your battery check? I know for sure that a defective battery can cause so much trouble with the vehicle's electrical system and check the battery connectors (battery ports, ground and + battery cable that goes to starter).
Well it's been almost 2 weeks now and it seems to be fixed. Putting in the new relay worked. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions!! Merry Christmas!!
