What is the tallest gear I could get by with in
my 66 F100 with the 240-6 stock engine?
It has the original 3:70 gear in it now. I just want to lower the engine RPM at bit so I't don't
sound and feel like it's doing 3000 RPM at 55mph.
I just don't want to sacrifice too much power.
Someone recommended a 3:25 but I thought that was
a bit too tall.
There is too much slack in the rear end anyway and I thought if I need to replace the ring gear
and pinion I may as well put a higher ratio in.
What do you guys think?
You didn't say what tranny your running...if it's an automatic, they're a little more forgiving if you overgear (say to a 3.08). The cheapest solution is to buy a "towing" type torque converter, which are not as loose at crusing speed, and will lower your RPM a couple hundred. Another easy solution is to install larger tires in the rear. If it's a stick your options aren't as great if you overgear and the power is not there...you'll end up downshifting more or start spending the ol' grocery money on speed equipment.
Hey Deen, my 66 has the original 3 on the tree
transmission. I have already put 255x75x15 tires
on.
It helped a little but not as much as I wanted.
Now the speedo is off 5 mph.
