I would Like To convert my 66 F-100 (352 2v) to fuel injection but I just can't see shelling out about $1000.00 for the system when my old holley works just fine.
Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
perhaps a setup off of a newer OEM engine will work..
i looked into the samething and was told the same as above. i wanted better milage from my 77 f100 351c. i asked about changeing the rear end ratio and was told gas is cheaper than a rear end. about all i can suggest is this. put taller tires and wheels on it or else, swap out the motor for a late model motor and tranny w/overdrive. this is now what i want to do. i've been told it's a real pain to install the computer and wiring harness. i don't have the guts to try it yet, besides my motor is in good shape.
I recently bought a '71 F250 4x4 that was fitted with a new 390 and Accel throttle body fuel injection. It's a 750cfm gm type. I like the
fact that it starts cold instantly, just like
a new truck. It moves out too! Of course with
the gearing on this truck you can't take advantage
of the fuel injection as much as with a 2x4 truck
with the right gearing. The acceleration surprises most people, though.
If I were to do it myself, I'd put on a 4bll.
carb with vac. secondaries. This thing doesn't
get great gas milage. 600cfm would probably be
fine for a truck like mine.
There is a company called WindsorFox (windsor engines-Fox bodied mustangs) that is all about converting older 302's and 351W to EFI. There have been some articles in the last year in Mustangs and Fast Fords outlining projects to convert a 60's failane and also a mustang. I think they tried to stick to a $2,000 budget by utilizing as much junkyard pieces as posible. WindsorFox makes custom wiring harnesses for these kind of projects as well as many small bracketry things to make it work. The hard stuff seemed to be fabricating the fuel delivery lines, and pump, and welding in bungs into the exhaust for an O2 sensor and an EGR heat tube. They could probably help with wiring issues. Personally I have owned a 3.0L 92 Ranger with EFI and it was a joy from a no maintence reliability and drivability standpoint. I am currently driving a 305 Camaro with throttlebody setup and it also works very well and is much simpler if I decide to have injectors cleaned. The only thing I notice about the chev system is that the computer reacts to it's sensors slower and less seemlessly than the ECC ford. I bought a magazine that was a collection of fuel injetion articles from various Peterson publications. It is a good primer into the world of fuel injection. People have taken old Hiperformance exotic manifolds from the 60's and had fuel injector bungs drilled into the intake runners. Lot's can be done, however unless you can do most of it yourself it'll cost a bunch of money.
