ok, i shot the bunny and bought a laptop. it's a Toshiba M105-S1001. it's double fast compared to my compaq presario pc but i know it's not a hotrod.
my question is, how to best clean a LCD screen. i'm scared to death i'm going to hurt something. we all know how it goes, you come across a funny post and coffee, soda, or beer goes rocketing out your nose all over your new toy, and the first instinct is to rip off your drawers and wipe it down(which may cause other issues, like not wanting the computer in the house). unless you're wearing a tee shrirt too, then that comes off for fluid removal.. is there a product that is better than you're underwear to clean the screen w/out hurting it?? thanks.
I've had my LCD TV for about a year now, haven't cleaned it yet... too scared to.
If I were to though, I'd moisten a face cloth just so it's damp with plain water. When I say damp, I mean not sopping or dripping, just damp to the touch. Of course, light pressure.
i use windex on mine, with paper towels and some air to blow it off when i am done, and have never had a problem, going on 2 years now, and looks like it is still brand new.
Any anti-static cleaning wipes made for electronic equipment. I use a product called Nice'N'Clean. Website: www.nicepak.com
I think I got them at Wal-Mart. Similar products can be found at Staples, Circuit City and similar type stores. It is a low alcohol product that leaves no residue.
i'm concerned about the non-alcohol wipe suggestions, though i appreciate all suggestions. you're talking to carl and saying no alcohol. i just don't see that bird flying.
honestly, i'll try each suggestion. and not push to hard on the screen i suppose.

The coating on the Toshibas is a 3M film originally designed for desert chopter blades and the front of fighter aircraft. It is HIGHLY resistant to scratching and cleaning products. You can use soft terri-cloth to wipe off just about anything on it without using any solvents or water without fear of scratching it unless you really bear on it.
I have the same product on my Treo 700w PDA (its an invisible skin coating a fraction of a millimeter thick). I've dropped the Treo on concrete without a scratch. Amazing stuff. I also have it across the front off my truck (the product for this is called "invisible bra"). Don't worry about ruining that Toshiba cleaning the screen!

We've got laptops in the cop cars......I've been told plain water in a paper towel and a light wiping does the trick.....One of your responders advised this......It works.....And if spilling coffee, coke, etc. ain't gonna kill it, plain water and paper towel sure ain't........

Information
To clean the screen (LCD panel) of a Toshiba notebook computer, lightly moisten a soft cloth with common household glass cleaner (Windex, for example) and gently wipe the screen until it's clean. Glass cleaners are also well suited to cleaning the glass screens of the CRT monitors often used with desktop computers.
Glass cleaning products are not recommended for the plastic casework of the computer, and they should never be sprayed directly onto the computer's casework. Always spray cleaning agents onto a cloth (away from the computer), then wipe the screen or other surface with the moistened cloth.
Products designed specifically for cleaning notebook computer screens are generally safe to use on the screens of Toshiba notebook computers, but be sure not to use them to clean the plastic casework.
CAUTION: Be extremely careful to keep all liquids, including cleaning fluids, out of the computer's keyboard, speaker grille and other openings. Never spray liquids directly onto the casework of a computer, as the liquid can drip or seep into the computer's internal circuitry and damage it. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning agents on your Toshiba computer. Damage to your Toshiba computer caused by cleaning products or other liquids is not covered under the Toshiba Standard Warranty.
My oldest son has a habit of putting his fingers on his laptop screen ALL THE TIME!!! (I'm surprised that there isn't shrimp all over the screen!)
I use a window cleaner known as "Invisible Glass" and a washcloth. (The best window/windshield cleaner that I've ever used! NO streaks!!!)
Spray the washcloth and wipe the screen. The only pressure is from the washcloth touching the screen.
Turn the cloth after wiping, and dry the LCD screen, again, with only the pressure of the cloth doing the work.
