Question Exhaust Recommendations

Well, after 205K miles the inside of my Ex is starting to smell like French Fries, so it's time to change the exhaust. I've been doing some research and am not quite sure which vendor will give me the best results.

So, I thought I'd throw it out to you good folks for comments.

What I DO want is 4" Stainless Steel - I don't have a CAT on this unit and I want to have a free flowing system that will last a looooong time. Single exhast is fine, I'm not worried about the "dual" look.

What I DON'T want is any exhaust drone.

Banks? MBE? What are you running and what do you think.

Oh, and I want to be able to put it in myself - I'm a shade tree mechanic from way back and have the tools needed to change the exhaust, (i.e. sawzall, wrenches, 6# sledgehammer and band aids, plus better half is an EMT). I don't have welding equipment, so prebent and OEM bolt on is a must.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Fire up your keyboards.

I just put a Stainless Steel Turbo Back MBRP exhaust on my 2002 Excursion with the 7.3 L. I love the way it looks and sounds and even while I was running it stock ith the factory air cleaner, I noticed the extra torque.

The sound is just enough to notic at idle and as quiter as stock at highway speed. The only time you really notice the sound is when you are accelerating. I think it sounds totally cool and is exactly what I wanted.

MBRP maakes a stainless either in 409 or 304. You could remove the muffler and use the muffler delete if you don't like it.

My stainless MBRP 4" system took about 2 hours to put in with minimal effort (including removal of old system).

The only additional noise I noticed was turbo whistle, or if the windows were all down the more "agressive" sound at full throttle. Other than that it was just as quiet, if not quieter, at cruising speeds.

Tedfrd,

The MBRP is the best value and best sounding out there for an EX, no drone from everyone customer that we have ever talked with too! We stock them in aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless and have a pricing policy to make sure you get the best deal as well. Call us if you have any questions on one.

Tedfrd, just like Mark stated, I too am happy with the MBRP I purchased from him last month.

The fit and finish of the MBRP was incredible. I was very surprised the whole exhaust system fit as well as it did. It fits better than the Bassani system I bolted onto my Lightning, and I paid more for the Bassani set up than I did the MBRP.

You'll need two people to hang the downpipe though. At least I did. If anyone can do that alone, I'd be very impressed.

Other than wriggling the downpipe into the proper position and then holding it there to get clamped, this was the easiest exhuast I've ever bolted onto a vehicle.

I was a tad surprised to hear how quiet it was at idle and mid throttle though. You can't really hear any aggressive growl until you put your foot into and go WOT. If I could change one thing about it, I'd like it to be more aggressive sounding at idle and mid throttle.

Stewart

PS - Like Mark stated, absolutely zero drone.

I did the downpipe myself. I had the exhaust cut before the crossmember and when I got home I let it cool, disassemble and installed the downpipe all by my lonesome.

I used a stainless Magnaflow turbo back kit in my '03 Ex. Fit great sounded great. This one replaced a Diamond Eye that made my Ex sound like a 747 preparing for take-off. The Magnaflow had a very nice mellow sound to it. Probably going to go with that kit on my '05 as well.

I'm not kidding when I say, I really am impressed. Maybe mine was just harder than the norm, but me and my buddy must have switched up (me trying, him holding from the bottom, and vice versa) a few times before we got the darn thing clamped onto the turbo exhaust housing.

How anyone could do that by themselves makes me think you have special powers!

I just put the clamp on the manifold and then manuevered the downpipe into the right place and clamped. Nothing special.

I do but that is what I tell the women.

Jhooch,
How exactly did the Diamond Eye sound? Was the sound of that of the turbo? Do you still have the old kit?

Big time whine from the Diamond Eye and it didn't seem to want to line up right either (difficult to install). The Magnaflow fit like a glove. I used part of the Diamond Eye kit from the cat back on my 04 F350 6.0 4X4 Crew. I still have the downpipe laying around somewhere.

How much was the Diamond eye? I kind of like that whine. I am in the process of buying a 2000 X 7.3.

It was around $400 bucks if I remember right. Mine was a 6.0 though. May sound different with a 7.3. Good luck. Honestly I kind of liked the whine too but my wife would have no part of it and of course it's "her rig".

Thanks everyone for the input!

Looks like the MBRP is the winner. I guess I know what I'll be doing in a week or two now that I have the fuel issue sorta cleared up.
