buddy just bought an 81 bronco and we already fixed some problems on it like, tons of vacuum leaks and wouldn't start when hot, set timeing from 10 retarded to 10 advance, but it still backfires through the carb. this motor has alot of blow by and we did a vacuum check "15 psi with no jumping" and compression check 120-150, not good compression but livable. now when it's cold it's doens't backfire and when he runs 93 it doesn't but on 87 and the motor is warm you can't think of more than 1/8 throttle or it'll be backfireing like crazy throwing flames 3ft high.
ok, that would be the 351m more then likely. i would think that motor would run at 8* of timing much better. you might need to change the cap/rotor and plug/wires as well. how do the plugs look? was the motor ever rebuilt?
no it's a windsor with a small block bellhousing C6, we messed with the timing and seems to run best at 10 adv but it still backfired when it was retarded. i forgot to mention that the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, ingnition box is all new. they plugs are a little grey so i guess it's running a little bit rich. motor has alot of miles on it. also checked firing order.
