I could use a little help. I have a 79 xlt bronco that I have been restoring over the last few years. Under the hood, everything has been replaced, except wiring harness and ignition switch. Recently it has not been starting, I let it in the garage and come back a day later and it starts right up? Every couple of starting attempts same thing- wont start. Battery is fully charged and when it does start- it turns quickly and starts fine. When it does not- nothing- no selinoid clicking-like a poor connection or bad battery. Does anyone have any suggestions- could it be the ignition switch- how do I test? Could it be the automatic nuetral switch going bad? Any other suggestions.
Is their any way to adjust the switch? I have never tried holding the shifter up, but have shifted back and forth. Sometimes it will start- but am not sure this would be the cause.
Yes, it can be ajusted, it is on the steering column, I think it shoud be down low, and should be bolted to the top of the column. You can bypass it by hooking the wires togather to see if this is indeed the problem.
It sound like a poor connection, are the batery cables new and do you have a good ground? when it wont start do you have power inside the truck? also the switch on the column is the ignition switch, the netural safety switch is on the trany linkage and it can be adjusted using a small drill bit(cant remember what size). check you connections and if that doesnt work let me know and i will look up that safty switch for you.
neutral safety is down on the tranny.could be this or ignition switch or bad connection or................could be lots o stuff.next time it does it get the test light out and start checking to see if you have power at the various spots that could give these symptoms.could be any thing really.you've got to check when it's messing up to see whats not working.it's frustrating.any time i have issues like this i put all the hammers out in the yard so i won't be tempted to smash stuff.knuckles get sore tho.
get a haynes manual for your truck' look in trouble shooting it will take you through the easy to check stuff. Your nutral saftey swicth is only there to ensure your truck only starts in neutral or park, if it was faulty it would start in any gear or not at all. As suggested check all connections make shure all grounds are conected ,motor to body, body to frame and negative battery post to body.
I'm haveing the same problem right now, and I don't know why it started doing this. Everything was fine from the day I got it about 1 and a 1/2 ago, but now I try and start it, and nothing. I got borred one night, and tried to start it, and it started right up(and it hadn't started in about a month).
There's alot of things to look at, and I don't even know where to go now.
OK, I just went out side and tried to start it. Nothing happened, but when I pulled the gear selector towards me and pushed it far into park, and then tried to start it, and it started.
So I'm guessing this means it is the neutral saftey switch, and it needs to be adjusted??

That is probally the root of the problem- I am pretty good at turning wrenches but am electically chanllenged. When it would not start- I pulled out the test light and turned the key on- got power to the ignition side of the selinoid- but that is as far as I could go- I have a Haynes and Chiltions manual, but they do not tell how to test specific components, such as brain box, coil, selinoid ect- this stuff has come down in price over the years, so my plan was always to just go replace it- but now- it is all new I do not know where to start.

I will go back over the ground wires- The battery cables are new, and I cleaned the posts and re attached the wires, cleaned the ground connections. I have a feeling that it might be centered around the selinoid- I have had times where the selinoid would be lose at the fender and the truck not start- the screws are
self tapping and I have had the selinoid off so many times that the holes are getting reamed out- I have already moved it over and drilled new holes. I think I will bolt it to the fender this week to see if it helps.
Hey Mike, my bronco is doing the same thing now, maybe it's contagous? So I posted for some help and got a reply telling me to check my starter wire from solinoid to starter and from positive battery post to solinoid so check out the thread it's in big broncos. And i will let you know if I have any joy.
I had the same problem recently.. couldn't figure it out for the life of me as everything checked out fine.. decided to go to auto wreckers and picked up an ignition module for $20.. fixed my problem, hope this helps
Ok I did what Greystreak suggested and all checked out ok. So then i was just pocking around and desided I would change the alternator regulator and know the truck starts just fine so I will watch it for a couple of days and if it's all good I will let you know.
