Here is my question......picked up some Super Tech synthetic oil for my winter oil change which I plan on putting in by Nov (gets really cold up here in Calgary) how many kms would you go on a grp III syn oil? I have used GTX 5w20 faithfully during the summer with no complaints and have put over 6000kms on my current fill, but I feel the synthetic has better low temp start-up for my over head cam motor and I want to run it for the whole duration of our Canadian winter which is from Nov to about April.
BTW the ST oil was half price compared to the others...Mobil1, PP, Syntec and so on.
well the only supertech synthetic i know of is the 10w30. is this what you bought? the 5w20 you were using is fine for cold starts to o degrees. just because its synthetic does not mean it will have better cold flow properties.
Owner manual recommendations are a compromise between what is best for the engine, what is cheapest for the consumer, and whats is best for the automaker who wants to sell you a new car every 3-5 years.
Supertech oil is pretty good. But, I wouldn't use it for over 6-months or 5k miles without a UOA. That puts you right at the limit.
And, I hope that you purchased a 5w and not a 10w oil. The lower the 1st number, the better off you are in the winter.
Esso XD3 0w30 is an oil you can get in Canada. That oil should have no problem running the full 6 months. And, you can use it year round.

The engine is designed to a specific service life. For a gasser, that is generally 150,000-200,000 miles.
The OM recommendations are designed to get you to that 150,000-200,000 miles, with some margin of safety.
So to the extent that the OM recommendations are not meant to make your engine last forever, yes, they are a compromise.
The part about wanting the engine to melt down in 3-5 years is absolute nonsense, considering the average age of the automobiles on the road is around 9 years right now (and going up, not down).
So I'm supposed to be putting SE grade 30 weight in my 390?
No. You should ignore 100 years of research and 100s (yes 100s) of millions of miles of actual real world experience by dozens of oil and engine manufacturers and do what someone (who you have never met except by alias on a message board and could very well be a 10 year old) else recommends.
And yes, 30w in a FE motor can work just fine, but I do not know the specifics of your motor.
1. Open glove box;
2. Pull out Owner's Manual;
3. Read Owner's Manual; and
4. Do what Owner's Manual says.
Yes I do realize that, you have to understand how cold the winter is and long it goes on for up here in Alberta and I don't want to change my oil in the blistering cold espesially with Ford's wonderful location of the oil filter, that is why I'm looking for extended oil changes from the 6000km range to about the 9000. That and the 0w30(-30 pourability) is the reason I want syn in it, when the summer comes around I'll be happy to go with the dino again, I just don't know how long the ST holds up to long drain intervals.
My knowledge of oil is very limited and that is why i asked the question to you "Oil gurus". So please reframe from insulting one's intelligence when I simple reply will suffice. Thanx.

You never indicated how long it takes you to go 6000 km.
I had 10/30 semi-synthetic in a moving van when I moved from California to Wisconsin. When I got to Wisconsin the temperature was minus 35 degrees. I was worried about the 10/30 in that cold so I crawled under the van in the Hoiiday Inn parking lot and unscrewed the drain bolt in the morning with a cold engine. At first no oil came out. Then very slowly some started to appear with a small flow and then big stuck together globs oozed out. The synthetic separated from the dino oil which taught me a good lesson about how Synthetic will at least flow in those kind of temps. I replaced it with 5/30.
I have used synthetics from 10k mi mark. Changed every 5k mi. Currently Have 216K on 3.1 L v6. Living atop the Divide in Montana similar temps and conditions. Hope the experience helps.
ANY name brand even supertech SL/SM level will run for 5K miles without worry IMHO.
just keep level up on the dipstick.
For low temp run a 5w/30 which will also give good hot summer running.
