I'm looking at buying a 61' F-600. The guy says it has been sitting in a barn for a very long time. He says he has gotten it to crank over but can't get it to run properly. He says he thinks it is electrical (mentioned it was burining up the points.) I have looked at the truck breifly just to get a view of the overal shape it is in. It has a 292 in it. He has replaced the fuel system from gas tank all the way to the carb, so it looks good there. I heard it turn over, but no spark. I have made a deal with this guy if I can get it to crank, I'll buy it.
Where would be the best place to start on this thing to get it to crank? Should I just go ahead and replace the Points/condensor/coil/rotor/cap. Or should I try and switch it to electronic ignition? If I switch, what do I need to get, and can you get it all in a kit, or do you have to get it piecemeal. What system should I go with and what kind of cost am I looking at?
try to see if the battery is charged and the cables are hooked up properly. check the starter solenoid or the starter. it may need new spark plugs. Buy some starting fluid and if it fires up, its the spark plugs. There could be a choke problem, eiter there is a problem with the choke or you are not using the choke properly. check the fuel pump and fuel filter, they could be clogged. If your truck is equipped with an electric fuel pump and theres is a carb primer switch in the cab you have to use that. check the voltage regulator,coil,generator/alternator. I have always wanted one of those trucks and have done some research on those trucks and they are very rare. buy it for the truck itself and let a shop take a look at it for the problem.
